The Spanish Steps in Rome were built to connect the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See (Piazza di Spagna) with the Trinità dei Monti church at the top of the hill. Funded by French diplomat Étienne Gueffier and designed by Italian architect Francesco De Sanctis, construction began in 1723 and was completed in 1725. The steps are named after the Spanish Embassy, not because they were built by the Spanish.
