Madrid is a municipality and a city in Spain. The city, with historical town status, is the capital of the State and the Community of Madrid. Its municipal area, the most populated in Spain, has a population of 3,416,771 (INE 2024), making it the second most populated city in the European Union, as well as its metropolitan area, with 6,779,888 registered residents.

As the capital of Spain, it houses the headquarters of the National Government and its ministerial departments, the Cortes Generales (Congress of Deputies and Senate), the Supreme Court, and the Constitutional Court, as well as the official residence of the King and Queen of Spain and the President of the Government.

In 2009, 50.1% of the revenue of the top 5,000 Spanish companies was generated by companies headquartered in Madrid, which accounted for 31.8% of them. It is home to the 4th largest stock market in Europe, the 2nd in Latin America (Latibex), and several large corporations.
It is the 8th largest city in the world with the largest presence of multinationals. It has a nominal GDP of €181.28 billion (2023) — 12.4% of the national GDP — and a nominal GDP per capita of €50,216 (2022), making it the 1st Spanish metropolitan area in terms of economic activity (−19% of GDP).[24] It is also first in terms of the number of hotel overnight stays.
