We Have A Home In A Gypsy Village
Welcome to our home in a Roma village—often called a Gypsy village, but “Roma” is the respectful and preferred term.
We’ve had this home for 20 years now, and we absolutely love it here. It’s incredibly peaceful, and the community is warm and welcoming. Our village is nestled between majestic mountains and the famous Rose Plains of Bulgaria.
In May and June, the air is filled with the scent of roses as most of the villagers work in the rose fields during the annual harvest. This is a time of both hard work and joy, as rose oil production is a proud tradition in the region.
As the rose season ends, the lavender begins to bloom, painting the landscape in soft purples. Then comes the season of fruit and vegetable harvests—everything grows in abundance here thanks to the rich soil and generous sun.
One of the most exciting times is the wild berry harvest—called Боровинки (Borovinki) in Bulgarian. These berries grow high up in the mountains and their gathering is a treasured yearly event filled with anticipation and joy.
To mark the end of the harvest season, the entire village comes together for a huge celebration. Everyone gathers in the fields just outside the village for a barbecue and traditional dancing. The music plays all night as villagers join hands and dance in a great circle under the stars—a beautiful expression of community and gratitude.
