Welcome to RUN & EXPLORE, the brand new series from LettyRuns where we lace up our shoes and discover incredible destinations all over the world, one stride at a time! As I’m constantly traveling and exploring, I’m thrilled to share these unique running adventures with you.
For this episode, we’re taking you to the captivating mountain village of Valldemossa, Mallorca! Tucked away in the breathtaking Serra de Tramuntana (a UNESCO World Heritage site!), this isn’t just a run – it’s a journey through over a thousand years of history, stunning landscapes, and a vibrant cultural legacy.
Despite the Mallorcan sun turning some of our run into a spirited walk (hey, it was about 90°F / 32°C, and we got the miles in!), every step revealed new wonders. We started our adventure by the local cemetery (a story for the end of the video, haha!), then wound our way through Valldemossa’s charming, flower-adorned streets, like the picturesque Carrer de Catalina Homar.
Discover the humble Casa Natal de Santa Catalina Thomàs, the birthplace of Mallorca’s only native saint (born 1531!). We explore the historical crossroads of Plaza Ramón Llull and climb to the incredible Plaça de Santa Caterina for panoramic views that stretch across the valley to the distant Mediterranean – a sight that has inspired for centuries.
But perhaps most famously, Valldemossa was the winter retreat for legendary composer Frédéric Chopin and writer George Sand in 1838-1839. We dive into their story at the Chopin Museum within the historic Real Cartuja de Valldemossa, seeing where musical genius found solace and inspiration. We also take a moment of tranquility in the Jardí Rei Joan Carles.
This run was a fantastic blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, proving that some of the best ways to experience a place are on foot, no matter the pace!
