San Sebastian, Spain, is on the country’s north coast, very near the French border. It’s in Spain’s Basque country–three provinces that have their own separate heritage and language (there are 3 other Basque provinces over the border in France). San Sebastian has been an international beach resort since the mid-1800s, and attracts a sophisticated crowd. The city’s beaches, especially Playa de la Concha, are famously beautiful. It’s also the culinary capital of the Basque country, with some of the best food in Spain. This area is known for its tapas, or pintxos (pinchos) as they’re called here. San Sebastian also hosts a well-respected international film festival every year, usually in September.
