🧵 The Weaver’s Cottage | Restoring an Abandoned House in the Bulgarian Mountains

[Music] Hi. High in the Bulgarian mountains, nestled amongst forests and pastures, we found a house with a story woven into its walls. [Music] This historic Bulgarian home has been abandoned for many years. [Music] [Music] The plaster is crumbling. Some of the beams are broken, but the threads of the past still hold. [Music] [Music] [Music] This house was once full of life. The clack of the loom, the warmth of wool, the smell of wood smoke and baking bread. Now only a few artifacts remain. [Music] We have set out not just to restore but to try and stitch back together and reweave what time has destroyed. This floor is almost finished. We have oiled all of the wood with natural linseed oil. The back of the fireplace seems to be stone and rather than take it out, I think it might be quite nice to just expose it all, clean it all up, point repoint it if necessary, then coat it with PVA to seal it and make it look nice. Why PVA? Why can’t we just leave it raw? Cuz it’s so old and dusty. It just looks old and dusty. Okay. Get in the natural beauty of the stone. Okay. Well, let’s have a look then. You can try washing it when I’ve exposed it. Yeah. Okay. Go for it. [Music] So, this was the room before we put the new floor down. It had a a dirt floor which we removed. You have to go outside in order to get upstairs, which is typical of the period when this house was built. This is the landing now. Jeff has replaced it and he’s made it secure. And this was it. When we first bought the house, it was very unsafe. And through this room, you come to a smaller room. This is a small room with a hole in the floor that we think you might be able to turn into a bathroom. this uh joist here, the end has rotten away and it’s dropped by about 3 in. So, I’m going to have to once I put the floor down in here, put an acrop in, push the main the joist back up to the right height, cut, put in new timber bearing in the wall. What’s an acro joint? An an acrop is a is a prop you put in which you can wind up to to push the material back up again. Right. This was the only way Jeff could get the wood in for the floor. [Music] And this is it with some floorboards done. Brilliant. Just a nice size for a bathroom, isn’t it? Yeah. [Music] And now to travel back home over the Balkan Mountains. [Music] [Music]
