Walking Tour Along San Sebastián’s Coastline 🇪🇸 | Beautiful Spain in 4K UHD 60fps
In the 1990s, Zurriola was reshaped with breakwaters and new sand, turning a rugged shore into a vibrant urban beach. Famous for strong waves, it became San Sebastián’s surfing hub, hosting international contests and drawing surfers worldwide. Beside it rises the Kursaal Congress Centre (1999), Rafael Moneo’s iconic cubes that symbolize the city’s cultural scene. Known as the “young beach,” Zurriola buzzes with volleyball, concerts and nightlife, offering a lively contrast to La Concha. Opened in 1999, the Kursaal was designed by architect Rafael Moneo as two translucent glass cubes symbolizing “beached rocks. It hosts the prestigious San Sebastián International Film Festival, along with concerts, operas and major cultural events year-round. The building revitalized the Gros district waterfront, replacing the old Gran Kursaal casino demolished in 1973. At night, the cubes glow like giant lanterns, becoming one of the city’s most photographed modern landmarks. Playa de la Concha is one of Europe’s most famous urban beaches, celebrated for its elegant crescent shape and golden sand. In the 19th century, Queen Isabel II popularized it as a royal seaside retreat, boosting San Sebastián’s prestige. Framed by Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo, the bay offers stunning views of Santa Clara Island at its center. Its shell-shaped bay inspired the name “La Concha,” meaning “the shell,” a symbol now found all over the city. Ondarreta´s Beach is known for its calm waters and refined atmosphere, attracting families and locals seeking relaxation. It was once the preferred bathing spot of Queen María Cristina, reinforcing San Sebastián’s image as a royal resort. The beach lies at the foot of Monte Igueldo, with beautiful views of Santa Clara Island across the bay. During low tide, a stretch of sand connects Ondarreta to La Concha, letting visitors walk between the two beaches. The “Peine del Viento XV was created in 1976 by Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida in collaboration with architect Luis Peña Ganchegui. Its three steel sculptures anchored in the rocks symbolize the union of nature, sea, and human creativity. Situated at the western end of Ondarreta Beach, it faces the Atlantic waves crashing dramatically against the cliffs. When the sea is rough, underground vents spray seawater into the air, creating a natural fountain that delights visitors.
