EXPLORING SAN SEBASTIAN / Walking Tour, Luxury & Food

Welcome, welcome to another vlog from Spain. And this time I am in San Sebastian. As you may see from the background, I’m not exactly in central San Sebastian. And that is because I am starting this video in a hotel that I’ve picked for tonight. This hotel is probably the nicest and most unique hotel in terms of design that I’ve stayed in in a very long time. So, I’ll show you around a little bit. Then, we’re going to take the car and we’re going to head down into Sans Sebastian itself. I’m going to take you around the beach. I’m going to take you around the old town. We’ll see some other bits and pieces as well. And then we’ll come all the way back up to the hotel for a very special Michelin star dinner. Akalada Hotel feels like a modern hideaway carved into the cliffs above San Sebastian. Its clean design and endless sea views make it like a place where you reinterpret the definition of luxury. [Music] And only a 15-minute drive away, we’ve reached Sense of Aan itself. Time to start exploring. Look at this. Wow. [Music] I love grand pedestrian streets like this one. For me, walking everywhere is how I usually get around. And to see walking being prioritized in a city is always a really good sign to me. The other thing that I noticed when I was driving through is that it almost reminds me of K in the south of France, which is one of France’s most popular uh seaside holiday towns. So and to see that parallel between France and Spain in two seemingly different places that was quite interesting. [Music] [Music] Just got to the famous Leoncha beach and it is buzzing. Definitely a vibe. So many people both on the plat behind me and right here on the beach. Also, look at this view. That’s pretty cool. So, Sansan originally started as a fishing village, later became a port town, and only recently it’s become this sought after uh seaside town, but also a gastronomic paradise in Spain and in all of Europe. It’s interesting to see those parallels coming together in a place like this. Honestly, I had no expectations, but so far I am really enjoying it. It is so so so busy here. This part, which is the old town, is definitely more for tourists. Even the noise levels have gone up. But it’s worth it to come here if you want to get a feel for the history. And then obviously if you’re coming here for an entire weekend, I would personally stay in the more modern section. It just feels like you have more space. Time for a little fun fact. Do you remember in Valencia a few videos ago, I mentioned that there was their own language there which was called Valencian. And I kind of understood it because it kind of resembled Spanish. However, here they have their own language and it is like nothing I have ever heard before. I am so excited. And if you know me, you know exactly why. Because I am approaching. Can’t wait to go in now. [Music] The entrance fee is €3. So that’s probably the reason why it’s so empty. There’s a huge crowd outside the door. And then they come in, you see that you have to pay €3 to get in and they all turn back. I am back in the beautiful hotel that I showed you this morning. Walking along the famous winding staircase now and it is time for dinner at a three Michelin star restaurant. This is one of the most well-known restaurants in San Sebastian, not to mention in all of Spain. And I can’t believe I get the opportunity to dine there tonight. So, this restaurant offers a menu of 10 courses and they’re all made by the same chef that has been here for 50 years. So, he’s actually celebrating his 50th anniversary here at the restaurant this year, which is wild. It’s like a chicken gel with some crispy bites. Okay. Yes. Very good. [Music] We just got asked if we wanted to tour the kitchen and oh my goodness, I have never jumped up so quickly in my entire life. This is the final course. I love a good dessert. So, for me to have all this selection and presented so beautifully to mirror the staircase that you saw earlier in the middle of the hotel, that is like the nice cherry on top that I was waiting for. That was incredibly filling. So, I am dying a little bit, but extremely extremely grateful that I got to experience that. I am going to go back down to my room now. And this is where I end my video of San Sebastian. Thank you so much for watching and I suggest you check out this video next.

  1. Enjoyed that.
San Sebastian was my first foreign holiday. I was about six. Across the Channel on a Townsend Thoresen ferry, through France by coach, and there in just 24 hours. I remember spending a lot of time on that beach and one of our dinners: a fried egg, swimming in ketchup, on a bed of rice. Our hotel had two stars, I guess, but they weren't Michelin's.
