California’s Most Beautiful Road Trip | Eastern Sierra Nevada
[Music] What could possibly be the best early fall road trip through California? Well, we found out when my brother-in-law and his fianceé visited us once again, and we wanted to show them one of the most beautiful places we know, the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains at the beginning of fall. As summer faded and the first chill of autumn swept through the mountains, we set out on another journey through the Sierra Nevada. Aspen’s blazing gold, rabbit bush in full bloom, crisp mountain air under a sky of deep blue, and some of the most unforgettable views we’ve ever shared together. This wasn’t just a road trip. It was an adventure we’ll never forget. And it begins right now. After loading up the car with all of our camping essentials and a few hours on the road, we finally arrived to a place as much a Sierra tradition as the mountains themselves. Eric Shatz Bakery in Bishop, California. Inside, the smell of fresh baked bread and pastries greets you the moment you step through the door. Glass cases overflow with pies, cookies, and pastries of every kind, while shelves are stacked with their famous sheep herder bread and specialty loaves still warm from the oven. We grab sandwiches and treats for the road, fuel for the miles ahead before continuing our journey deeper into the Sierra. With lunch packed away and the road unwinding north, our next stop brought us to one of Eastern Sierra’s hidden gems, Wild Willies Hot Springs near Mammoth Lakes. Out on the open plane, wooden boardwalks lead you across sage brush and steaming vents to pools of crystal clear, naturally heated water. We slipped in and let the warmth soak the miles from our legs, all while gazing out on the endless Sierra Peaks in the distance. The perfect pause before continuing deeper into our fall adventure. [Music] From the hot springs, we wound our way up into the forested basin above Mammoth Lakes, heading for our home base for the next few nights, Twin Lakes Campground. Nestled beneath rugged peaks and surrounded by pines and aspen, it’s the perfect mix of alpine wilderness and easy access. We found our site, unloaded the car, and set up camp. Our little base camp for exploring the fall Sierra. [Music] [Music] [Music] As dust began to settle over the mountains, we made our way into the town of Mammoth Lakes for dinner. We stopped at the Mammoth Brewing Company where we sampled fresh seasonal brews and enjoyed a hearty meal that felt like the perfect reward for our first day on the road. With full bellies and tired smiles, we returned to our campsite at Twin Lakes and drifted off to sleep beneath the crisp starfield sky. [Music] The next morning, we woke to a cloudless sky and golden sunlight spilled through the pines. While coffee brewed and breakfast cooked, we enjoyed the warm morning rays and the shimmering lake just steps away. [Music] With the crisp mountain air around us and the peaceful scenery, it was one of those quiet Sierra mornings you never want to rush. [Music] Everyone Yeah, it’s nice that time. With breakfast finished and our packs ready, we set off into the crisp morning air. The trail led us through a sund dappled forest where golden light filtered through the trees. Just starting out on the duck pass trail and it is absolutely gorgeous. Going to hike up over the pass. and to go visit Duck Lake. Can’t wait to see how beautiful it is. We’ve got the perfect conditions for it, too. Just a completely sunny, sunny day in the Sierra. The fresh scent of pine created the perfect backdrop as we made our way towards the sparkling waters of Skeleton Lake. [Music] Continuing [Music] [Music] along the trail, we soon arrived at Barney Lake and the view was simply breathtaking. Turquoise waters stretched out beneath the rugged peaks, perfectly reflecting the clear sky above. Surrounded by pristine alpine scenery, it was one of those moments where the raw beauty of the Sierra makes every step of the hike feel completely worth it. here at Barney Lake. Just getting a top off, some fresh water before we make our ascent up the duck pass. About a,000 ft climb and then we’ll get to Duck Lake. After refilling our water bottles, we began the ascent up Duck Pass. The trail grew steeper and the air felt thinner as we climbed higher. The peaks stretched around us in every direction. And the vastness of the Sierra opened up with every step, giving a sense of both challenge and awe as we made our way towards the pass. Coming over Duck Pass. So beautiful. Now we should be getting a glimpse of Duck Lake. Reaching the top of the pass, we were instantly rewarded. Below us lay Duck Lake. Its crystal clearar waters framed by rugged peaks and rocky ridges. The view stretched as far as the eye could see. A perfect alpine panorama that made every step of the climb feel worth it. From the pass, we made our way down to the outlet of Duck Lake, and the water was breathtaking, tropical in color in many areas and crystal clear. The lake stretched out like a hidden gem, nestled among rugged peaks and reflecting the sky above. The inviting waters were impossible to resist, so I slipped in for a refreshing swim, surrounded by the serenity and grandeur of the alpine landscape. I’m in the tropics. [Music] Mommy, it’s a boat. It’s a boat, mommy. After a refreshing break at Duck Lake, we retraced our steps over the pass and made our way back to the campground. The hike back offered a new perspective on the peaks and the valleys we had traversed. The afternoon light casting long shadows across the rugged landscape. [Music] The evening air was crisp as we settled in and began preparing dinner. The day’s adventure leaving us tired but completely fulfilled. That night, we gathered around the campfire to cook hot dogs. The perfect way to end a day of hiking. The air was crisp and still, carrying the comforting scent of pine from the surrounding forests, and the glow of the campfire danced on the trees around us. As a hot dog sizzled and we savored the warmth of the flames, it felt like a quintessential autumn evening in the Sierra. Peaceful, simple, and completely unforgettable. Flipping my flapjack. Flipping my fat jackack. Your body is nice and warm. All right, just a light. Oh, River, you’re on fire. You’re on fire. Later that night, I made my way down to the lake for a few night shots. The air was crisp and still, and the water reflected the stars above. As the Milky Way stretched across the sky, the quiet of the alpine night made it feel like we had the mountains all to ourselves. A perfect, serene ending to a full day of adventure. [Music] The next morning greeted us with another stunning day in the Sierra. I’m making water. We brewed fresh coffee, cooked breakfast over the propane stove, and took a moment to simply enjoy the lake once again. The calm water mirrored the clear sky above, and the crisp mountain air made it the perfect start to another day of adventure in the Sierra. [Music] While camping in Mammoth, we couldn’t resist stopping by Shats Bakery to see what it was all about. Stepping inside, the warm aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries filled the air, and the shelves were stacked with every kind of treat imaginable. It was the perfect little detour, a taste of a local flavor before we continued our fall adventure. From Mammoth Lakes, we drove north on Highway 395 towards Virginia Lakes. As we drove along the road beyond Virginia Lakes, the landscape was transformed by stunning stands of aspens. Their leaves glowed a brilliant gold, shimmering like liquid light with every breeze. [Music] The lake itself wasn’t quite at peak color yet, but it was still beautiful to take in the serene alpine scenery. [Music] [Music] Just beyond the lake, the golden fall foilage lined the road, and we spent time soaking in the vibrant colors as we continued our journey through the eastern Sierra. The golden aspens lined both sides of the road, and the vibrant trees created a tunnel of color, a dazzling display of autumn that made it impossible not to stop and take it all in. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] On our way down from the lake, we turned onto a random dirt road, curious to explore a little more of the Sierra. To our delight, the detour led us to stands of aspens at peak fall color. Brilliant golds and yellows glowing in the sunlight, their leaves shimmering with every breeze. It felt like stumbling upon a hidden treasure. A perfect reward for taking the road less traveled. [Music] Currently bushwhacking our way up. See if we can find this amazing fall color that we’ve stumbled across. Look at this color. We were not expecting this. As we wandered, we were surrounded by aspens in all of their autumn glory. Deep yellows and fiery oranges on full display. Each tree growing brilliantly in the autumn light. The leaves shimmerred with every gentle breeze, creating a living tapestry of color that seemed to set the entire mountain side ablaze. It was a moment of pure wonder, a vivid celebration of fall in the Sierra Nevada. [Music] Maybe around here. [Music] [Music] So, I think we made our way back down Highway 395 towards our campground, but with a big storm blooming on the horizon, we decided to pack up and spend the night in a hotel. By chance, Mammoth Brewing Company was right next door, and it made for the perfect end of day meal. Fresh seasonal brews and hearty food were the ideal way to relax and toast to another unforgettable day in the Sierra. [Music] The next morning, we woke to a rainy Sierra morning. Mist hung low over the peaks, raindrops pattered on the trees, and the clouds created an atmospheric, almost mystical scene. It was the kind of morning that made the mountains feel alive, quiet, and full of mood. A striking contrast to the bright golden days we’d been enjoying. We made our way to the stove in Mammoth Lakes for a hearty breakfast. This cozy, rustic spot is a local favorite known for its generous portions and comforting classics. Fluffy French toast, sizzling skillets, and fresh brewed coffee that warms you from the inside out. The inviting atmosphere and delicious food made it the perfect start to a rainy Sierra morning. After breakfast, we headed down Highway 395 to Convict Lake, a place with both a striking name and a dramatic history. The lake is named for a group of convicts who attempted to escape from a nearby prison in the late 1800s, some of whom met their fate near its shores. Today, the lake is serene, its waters framed by rugged peaks and pine forests. [Music] Light rain and mist hovered over the surface, giving the scene a quiet, mysterious atmosphere that made it feel as if we had discovered a hidden corner of the Sierra. [Music] [Music] From convict Lake, we made our way to the Hot Creek Geological Site near Mammoth Lakes. A fascinating area where the power of the earth is on full display. Bubbling geothermal springs, steaming pools, and vibrant mineral deposits create an otherworldly landscape amid the surrounding sagebrass and peaks. [Music] The site has a storied history as well. Once a popular swimming spot, it was closed to the public in the early 2000s due to occasional dangerous volcanic activity. But today, visitors can safely explore the boardwalks and witness the raw natural energy of the region. [Music] Continuing [Music] south down Highway 395, we stopped at Mahogany Smoked Meats in Bishop, California, a local gem for all things smoked and cured. Inside, the air was rich with the aroma of hickory and oak, and shelves are lined with house-made sausages, jerky, smoked fish, and specialty meats. They also offer ready to eat sandwiches, snacks, and seasonal specials, making it the perfect place to grab a taste of the Eastern Sierra before continuing on our journey. [Music] And of course, being in Bishop, we couldn’t resist stopping at Eric Shatz’s bakery one last time. [Music] The familiar aroma of fresh bread and pastries welcomed us once again, and we couldn’t help but pick up a few treats to take along for the road. A perfect sweet ending to our Eastern Sierra adventure. [Music] As we continued down Highway 395, our final stop of the trip brought us to Indian Wells Brewing Company in Inyokern. Known not just for their craft beers, but also for their quirky, one-of-a-kind sodas, the brewery offers flavors you won’t find anywhere else. Alongside a menu full of hearty, flavorful dishes. [Music] With its relaxed atmosphere, inventive drinks, and welcoming vibe, it was the perfect spot to toast the end of our Eastern Sierra adventure before heading home. [Music] With our final stop behind us, we drove down Highway 395. The golden Sierra fading behind us as we reflected on the days we’d spent exploring. From sunlit alpine lakes and hidden hot springs to vibrant aspen groves and cozy mountain towns, the trip had become a perfect blend of adventure and serenity. As the miles passed beneath our wheels, we carried with us the sights, sounds, and memories of a fall in the Sierra that we’ll never forget. [Music]

Hello 👋 Scott, it's good to see you again. I'm sending you warm greetings from Northern California. You still do a great job of preparing your videos. All the best of good things for you and your Family. Stay safe out there 🏕️. 😊
The fall foliage is incredible. Happy to see we received light snow fall in mammoth the other day as well.
Hey scotty.. I'm taking my three border collies to onion valley, Kear sarge pass this sunday. I hope to run into you one of these days… Great video by the way thank you

What a great share of your trip, the entire 395 is a dream many miss (might be better that way).
Beautiful video, once again, Scott. How recent was this trip? What's the Mammoth area like for hiking in the back half of October? 👍👍🙏
Nice
Foilage? Like tinfoil? I think you meant to say foliage "foe-lee-idge."
Fall in the Eastern Sierra is unmatched. Cool, quiet, peaceful. Not much better than that. Fantastic video as always!
Love US 395….I did this exactly one year ago. My favorite!
Always a great hike…
Your son is growing fast soon he will be on all your hikes.
This video brings it ALL home. The Eastern Sierras are profoundly and deeply important to me and your warm commentary along with the family being with you, just compounds it all. Such a wonderful video and experience, I hope to retrace these steps soon!!
Very beautiful, my friend 🙂
Wow!! So Beautiful. Thank you for such a nice video.👍
Hello, my wife and I are new to these hikes and we wand to film our adventures for us. Have you ever done a video about your camera equipment or recommendations? Your videos show the colors very well. Would definitely appreciate your input on the topic.
Absolutely beautiful in the fall 🍁 395 is such a gem! 😊
Take me next time 🥺
🍂 황금빛 시에라, 숨이 멎을 만큼 아름다워요. 가족과 함께한 이 여정이 영상 너머로 따뜻하게 전해집니다. 덕 레이크의 풍경은 정말 환상적이네요.
Amazing! Most places in California always feel a bit underwhelming at this time of year with so many of the creeks dried up, but looks like the Eastern Sierra is a beautiful exception. Definitely planning a trip here next fall. Thanks for sharing!
I express my heartfelt appreciation for your wonderful upload. I look forward to seeing more of your projects . Wishing you continued happiness and good health.
Great photos
Another incredible video of the Eastern Sierras and 395 area. It was your experiences that inspired me to go and hike a couple of years ago. Can’t wait to head back. Pastry at the bakery was wonderful each morning. If you head back to the GC thru Williams reach out and we’ll share a coffee at BA.
Excellent!
How would you rate this hike to Duck Lake 12:54 mild, moderate? Time?
Wow! Cheers to the Dad that backpacked the little one. Haha.
Drives me nuts when I see people calling them the “Sierras”. Sierra is already plural. Sierras isn’t a word. This has been a public service announcement.
I like to hike. And camo. Like a homing pigeon I keep coming back to the beautiful Sierras since I discovered them in 1961.
색도 너무 예쁘고 경치도 정말 아름다운 곳이군요😊😊 그리고 누구든 함께하는 시간이 좋은거죠🤩🤩
재미있게 잘봤습니다👍🏻👍🏻
