Rising right by the sea, it impresses with its monumental façade, magnificent rose window, and colorful stained glass that create a magical play of light inside. This unique fusion of architecture and light makes visitors feel as if they’re entering a spiritual and artistic space at once 🌈
La Seu, or the Cathedral of Saint Mary, was built on the site of a former mosque. Its construction began in 1229, ordered by King Jaume I. After reclaiming Mallorca from the Moors, he vowed to dedicate a church to the Virgin Mary if the campaign was successful. The works lasted for several centuries, resulting in one of the tallest Gothic cathedrals in Europe, with the central nave reaching a height of 44 meters 🏗️📜
The cathedral went through several phases of renovation, and in the 20th century its interior was partially redesigned by none other than Antoni Gaudí. He added, among other things, a unique canopy resembling a crown of thorns and artistic chandeliers that further emphasize the sacred character of the space. It’s one of the few places outside Barcelona where you can admire Gaudí’s work in such a remarkable setting 🎨🔱
Inside, visitors are captivated not only by the columns and vaults but also by the Capilla del Santísimo – a chapel featuring a strikingly modern interpretation of sacred art by Miquel Barceló. His creation, combining ceramics, water, and biblical symbolism, offers a fascinating contrast to the Gothic character of the cathedral 🐟🔥
La Seu Cathedral is not only Mallorca’s spiritual heart, but also a must-see for every visitor – from its terraces you can enjoy stunning views of Palma Bay, the marina, and the nearby Royal Palace of La Almudaina.
