94-Year-Old Builds a Hobbit House and Living Alone in the Forest Scotland

I was searching for the Hobbit House in Tomich Village near Loch Ness, but locals said it’s located in the forest. Finally, I found the house in a protected forest area just outside the village. I was so excited to see what the inside of the cottage was really like, I went to knock on the door. Finally, I met Mr. Stuart Grant, the man who built this fairytale house. He was friendly and welcoming. So, I spent the entire day with him — chatting, helping with some work. He’s now 94 years old. when I come here first there was no roof and it was just a doorway there. Just a hole, not a door, And then I got, logs for the first to finish But there was flat roof on that time. and flat roof for many years. and then it started to leak So I put on a pointed roof like that and I was living in here with intentions of doing up the house I put concrete mixes and rolls and rolls of stone I went off Australia for seven years then I came Back I was going to do the house and I was staying here I had a little camp bed here and a little wood stove here with a pipe there I was staying with all these concrete mixers and And I thought, I’ll make it comfortable to live in here. and I ended up with this Animals are here before the house is out there. It was a shoemaker. Long ago. Long ago. Before my day, He had a cow with calf and chicken and a donkey and his favorite famous donkey All people told me that when he was coming home from the village the donkey decided I’ve gone far enough Lying down on the road he just left it there and he come home. then donkey came home itself later. Mr. Stuart moved in 1984 and spent many years slowly building this house with artistic detail. He has never read J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, and Tolkien never visited here — it’s just a coincidence. He created a small pond, and the garden is full of wildlife. feeding some food to the birds It’s so quiet ,only birds singing and the gentle flow of water from the stream. Mr. Stuart served in the British Army for two years, and he loves traveling . I love to travel. Troop ship left from Glasgow to the Mediterranean, Malta, sailed eight days to Colombo Singapore,Hong Kong, Korea and then a week leaving to Tokyo and then back Korea, fought for Seven Month and then it was my 2 years reserve in army. and coming home but Suez Canel is Blocked because of Six Days War and we were send to Africa. This is the bus we travel this was Afghanistan This is me in Japan while making a film reading poetry and writing on his woodcraft creations He crafted every detail of the house with artistic care. He loves Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam All of his family lives in Australia, but he said he could never leave the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. I showed him some of my videos,and he really loved the Cotswolds Cottage. He said he’d love to see what the inside of the Rose Cottage in the Cotswolds looks like. He cut the wood himself from fallen trees and collected stones from the river for the stonework. This Real Hobbit Door existed even before LOTR movie. Autumn is turning the trees beautiful colors, and the cold winter air is starting to set in across Scotland. Today, I’d like to share a special video about a real-life Hobbit house hidden in the forest, just outside a tiny village called Tomich, near Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Meet Mr. Stuart Grant, a skilled joiner who originally planned to renovate the old cowshed into a small house—but over the years, he transformed it into a cosy little home, built largely from wood.

I spent the entire day with him — talking, sharing stories, and lending a hand with a bit of his work. Hard to believe he’s now 94 years old.
He was incredibly friendly and welcoming, showing me around his beautiful home and saying how lovely it is to meet new people.
