In this video we will be traveling one of the most spectacular sections of the famous Route 40 in Argentina. La Cuesta de Miranda is located in the province of La Rioja and connects the cities of Villa Unión and Chilecito. There are 12 kilometers of curves, against curves and cliffs in the middle of reddish colors that make the landscape truly incredible. This spectacular stretch of the legendary Route 40 has one of the most beautiful slopes in Argentina. We will leave from Villa Unión on a fairly straight path, but little by little we will get into the mountains until we reach Chilecito. The cornice road is completely paved and climbs up to 2000 meters above sea level and offers truly incredible views. And you have to be attentive, because we can see condors flying over the area. Next to it, we will have the Miranda River, which accompanies the route on the 12 kilometers of winding road. We will see a valley in which the green of the mountains and cardones contrasts with the reds, ochers and oranges of the ground. We will leave along this special section of Route 40 from Villa Unión and little by little we will see the reddish colors in the middle of this impressive work of engineering that was built between 1919 and 1928. As we go deeper, we will realize why this section of Route 40 is considered one of the most beautiful in Argentina. The first stop we will make is at the viewpoint that separates the departments of Felipe Varela, where Villa Unión is located, and the department of Chilecito. Here we will be more than 2000 meters above sea level and we will begin to be surprised by the incredible colors that we will find. This slope is famous for its difficulty, with very sharp curves. It is a path with cornice and tremendous retaining walls, where you can enjoy formations such as “El Zaguán” in the “Las Trancas” area, where from there you can take a beautiful walk along the river bed, crossing two ravines with natural pools. filled with crystal clear water and very attractive waterfalls. Something to keep in mind here is the handling. Unfortunately, as on several tourist routes, we saw people driving with very little caution. From passing cars through very dangerous curves to going at very high speeds for this type of stretch. Most people who travel here do so for tourism, so the ideal is to do so calmly and respect all traffic signs along the route. The curves are with cliffs on the side, without much space, and committing recklessness can cost us our lives in a place like this. The strong wind erodes the entire landscape, allowing us to discover the scale of tones of some cliffs and the strange shapes they take when affected by climatic factors. Another stop we will make is at another viewpoint where there were two women from the area selling crafts and food in the middle of the incredible landscape. In all these paradores we will have signs with information about the Cuesta de Miranda. Here, for example, they inform us that the old Route 40 passed through this place, which we remember runs through Argentina from north to south, from Jujuy to Santa Cruz. Previously, this section was gravel, making it almost impossible to cross. This shows the dimension of the engineering work currently carried out. Also something particular that this entire region of the country has, but especially in the Cuesta de Miranda, are the altars in homage to the Late Correa. La Difunta Correa is a mythical Argentine pagan figure who has great veneration in this area. Every year thousands of people visit her to pay their respects, make requests and thank her for those already granted. Its main sanctuary is very close, in the town of Vallecito, in the province of San Juan. According to history, Deolinda Correa was a woman who lived in the first half of the 17th century. Her husband was recruited during the civil wars and transferred to La Rioja against his will, which made her have to follow him. With her nursing son, the woman followed the troop’s trail through the San Juan desert, carrying only some supplies of bread, jerky, and two chifles of water. When the latter ran out, she hugged her son to her chest, took shelter under the shade and died of thirst. That is why people leave bottles of water in their sanctuaries. The route is something that must be done if we are in the area. We will usually stay in Villa Unión or Chilecito if we are visiting Talampaya National Park or Ischigualasto Provincial Park. Doing the Cuesta de Miranda and going to see Chilecito should be something we don’t have to miss. The journey, making several stops, takes a little over an hour. It is something unmissable. El camino por la Cuesta de Miranda, en La Rioja, lo estaremos realizando en auto e iremos desde la ciudad de Villa Unión (ideal para visitar Talampaya y el Valle de la Luna) y Chilecito, donde tendremos muchas actividades para hacer.

La ruta 40 es la más famosa de la Argentina y recorre el país de Norte a Sur y tiene muchos lugares increíbles que no hay que perderse. Desde la Cuesta de Miranda hasta la Ruta de los 7 lagos que conecta Bariloche con San Martín de los Andes.
Un lugar que sin dudas no hay que perderse de la Argentina y de la mítica Ruta 40.
