[Music] [Music] two things to point out about this picture one for example how the contours are not very cleanly defined they’re left rather vague in some places and then you look at details like the foot or the hand where you see that the artist is aimed for a quite different level of finish in different parts comparatively speaking if you compare it with other depictions of mars he looks rather sullen and miserable naked his pattern is just supporting his frame and he’s rather undignified [Music] the god was the second most important in the roman pantheon standing only below jupiter the equivalent of zeus due to its blood-red colors the planet mars was named after this god and the protector god of rome is now internalized among the star [Music] he was a spanish painter who was the leading artist in the court of king philip iv he lived and painted during the baroque period he painted many portraits of the spanish royal family notable european figures and commoners his masterpiece is considered to be las meninas which was painted in 1656.
