Out of all the incredible architecture I observed this summer in Spain, the most stunning has to be the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia. It has been under construction since 1882 and is still not complete! It was the brainchild of celebrated architect Antoni Gaudí, who took over the construction of the building in 1883 and dedicated the rest of his life to its construction until his untimely passing in 1926.

The building has a fascinating, long history. In 1936, anarchists broke in and ignited the crypt, which destroyed much of Gaudí’s original plans for the future construction of the building. It took around 16 years to piece the plan back together from various fragments. Some of the architectural ideas were so ambitious that it was even necessary to wait for modern 3-D imaging technology to be available in order to build parts of it. It was projected to be complete in 2026 but that estimate is being amended due to the recent pandemic. The architecture is a mixture of the traditional Gothic style with “modern” Art Nouveau elements.

When we were first in Barcelona, we didn’t pay to tour the interior of the cathedral since we had many other things we wanted to see, but at the end of our trip when we returned, both Ethan and I toured the mind-blowing interior. If you think the outside looks impressive, wait until you see the inside!
This Friday, I’ll be posting the 2nd video of our Spain travels including these shots of the Sagrada Familia, so be sure to check it out here 😉 → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovZ8laNIy1U
