Morron San Juanero and Morron del Hornillo ¦ Sierra Nevada Hike ¦ Spain

Morning folks thanks for joining me uh by the time you see this it’ll be several weeks since I’ve posted a video and uh yeah it’s just uh succession of things at home and uh just not really been able to get out but uh I’m over in Spain

Again and uh as you can see by the uh summery clothes but uh I’m out for a walk in the Sierra Nevada starting at puera delagua uh alpinismo skiing station not much snow up the very highest peaks but not much elsewhere as yet at the beginning of November

Um and uh we’re about 2,000 m above sea level and I’m just setting out on a walk I really haven’t got the the best of cold weather equipment over in Spain uh so I’ve just put everything on that I’ve got and uh I’m heading up uh there’s three mountains up here now I

Really don’t know what I’m going to reach so you might be able to tell from the title I’ve put on the video it might just say a short stroll in the Sierra Nevadas cuz it’s absolutely freezing uh 4° Centigrade or Celsius I measured in the car but there’s a strong wind chill if

Some of this Cloud Burns off it might get a little bit warmer uh but it’s a little bit dangerous um because the wind is very high not as high as yesterday yesterday it was um 160 km per hour today it’s a little bit less but it’s still going to be a bit uh

Dodgy along some of the ridges uh so let’s see where we get to the first Peak on the uh possible route is uh I think it’s called mironda horo that’s around about 2,300 ft above sea level and then beyond that along a ridge sort of down and back up is uh San

Juano and then finally the Cur is ly named mediaa which I think translates to midday so uh how that got its name I’m not sure but as I say I’m just going to have to see how far it feels safe to go with the wind and the

Temperature but uh why not stick with me and see what we find along the way one thing things for sure whatever I get to lovely and peaceful up here just me few red starts uh thought I heard some cross bills before but uh yeah very quiet and tranquil the sun’s breaking through the

Cloud already who knows I might actually have to start taking some layers off well just about to clear the tree line here after a short climb up around about a kilometer maybe a bit more just uh possibly well one and a half maybe a mile or so and uh just about to clear

The tree line so I suspect I’m going to find out just how windy it is and uh just what the wind chills like so if you can’t hear me from here on in apologies I’ll do my best with the uh with the sound if not I’ll put some music on anyway onwards and

Upwards right down there don’t know whether you can see it that’s the uh our Pismo Center that we climbed up from uh the trail isn’t that easy to follow it’s not that well marked so always seem to be either slightly to the right of it

Or to the left of it just need to rise up a little bit here I think I’m probably on a goat track or something at the minute uh but just climbing up towards the Ridge and then sort of like head left and uh we should be back on

Track wind chills not too bad so far see what we get when we get right up onto the ridge I there we have it Mar on De horo 2377 m above sea level uh just taking a bit of shelter from the wind it’s absolutely uh

Yeah brisk is the word I think that way you’ve got Julio which we climbed not so long ago I’ll put a a link to the video at the end of this one if you want to have a look at that and that way in Cloud at the moment is San Panero

Uh yeah it looks a little bit uh dicey along that Ridge but it’s uh yeah I think I’ll have a rest here and give it a go um I reckon that will probably be it for today though I’m going to get to the top of there and then I’m going to

Save uh medo DEA for another medo DEA and it’s not so windy see right out over the Mediterranean down that way and over the town of eljo so far the uh the trails haven’t been easy to follow as I’ve mentioned earlier uh so good GPS is a good idea or

Uh I’ve never really found any decent maps for this area got some really want some ones on really crappy paper not very well detailed uh so uh yeah good GPS is probably the best bet right few photos and then uh I’m on the way again onwards and onwards at that Majestic or

What the place you can see snow up on the top here just a slight dusting had a bit of rain yesterday and I think that would have fallen as snow whether you can hear me at all just grabbing a moment’s rest some comparative shelter behind a rock here wow that wind is

Strong if it’s not the uh strongest wind I’ve ever walked in it’s right up there with the strongest all the GoPro still strongest just down in the path uh pass there between Theo and uh someone Arrow very nearly turned back cuz it was that strong but you’re not on a really

Dangerous Ridge so it’s uh it’s not bad kept plugging away now that isn’t a uh a false Summit behind me I’m not too far from the top and you can see just a dusting of snow on the uh Northern side welcome rest bu push on and then turning around and heading

Back as I said Med can wait for another day place I yes sanero 2,6 9 m above sea level what a you you can see over to medad over there but uh no not today that last bit was tough it was absolutely freezing up here as

You can probably see it’s not snow that I could see before it’s droplets of water that have condensed on the grasses and plants and then Frozen so it’s just like a frost over everything whole Frost boy just record another quick flip here Aro 269 M the gopro’s playing up

It’s too cold for it so uh it locked up a couple of times just uh put a new battery in so uh anyway uh I made it not going up uh medo de I’m just going to uh just add a BL water I’m going to head straight back down cuz

It’s too cold here to be upwards and downwards right back to mironda now down the other side I’m glad about it’s tough on the way now with the wind behind me is really uh trying to push you forward and uh yeah not really Pleasant also the cold start to find the uh the

Limits of the gear I’ve got with me these gloves are definitely not uh good enough for uh this wind chill so yeah over the other side hopefully a bit of a rest by all right down to the tree line now about a mile from the car or

So and uh what a lovely morning that was hope you’ve enjoyed watching half as much as I have walking quite tough right at the limits of the gear that I’ve got with me uh don’t know how much you could hear up there but we’ll see see when I get the footage back

Uh uh yeah it’s nice to be back down out of that wind the whole route only about 10 km 6 miles it’s a straight out in back routs and uh yeah it’s been wonderful first for me that’s uh sanero and the uh Miranda horo of course

Is a new one for me as well I’ve not really been up this side I’ve only been up the sort of Julio side before but uh yeah it’s been very enjoyable I’m going to get in the car warm up have a sandwich and head back down to the house and uh

See what Maria’s up to and uh get a pot of coffee on I think to warm up but uh anyway thanks again for watching uh if you’ve enjoyed it if you don’t mind giving it a thumbs up and if you’re new here why not hit the uh

Subscribe button so you get informed of uh new videos when they come up but either way thanks very much for watching I’ll see you very soon on another video cheers then bye-bye

Join me in this video for a rather cold and windy hike up two mountains in the Spanish Sierra Nevada, Spain. Starting from the alpine ski station at Puerta de la Ragua, we first climb up to the ridge line and up to Morron del Hornillo at 2,377m ASL, from there we continue along the ridge and make a steeper climb up to San Juanero at 2,609m ASL. On a better day (or better equiped for the cold!) you could continue here to the summit of Mediodia. But on the day, I decided to turn around at this point and head back down.

Many thanks for watching!

  2. Good to see you again and in Spain no less. 😂. Chilly day. Quite a hike. Beautiful. I’m sure you are home by now so hope you enjoyed your trip or are enjoying your trip. 😂😂😂

  3. Had to pause about half way through for a minute so posted what I had and just started it back up. 😂😂. It’s hard to hike when the maps and GPS isn’t helpful. Bill has had that issue before too. That wind was brutal. It was messing with your mic. 😂. Man that fog was wicked as was the temps. Good job getting to the top and finishing up. You deserve that pot a coffee. 😂😂

  4. Great to see you out and about on the Spanish Mountains des. They looked like some of ours going up. Fresh out I take it – bobble hat and ice on top. A lovely vibe bro. I imagine you got back buzzing all the way through. Good going. Mark

One thing that struck me was you could of been hiking the carneddau in Wales or indeed the Peak District with that southern latitude balancing the super altitude your where at

  7. Taking a virtual hike with you through the Spanish Sierra Nevada was invigorating! The scenery was breathtaking, and those wind speeds added an extra adventurous touch. 🌬🏔 Your resilience in the chilly weather and misty summit made it a captivating journey. Can't wait for the next exploration! 👣

  8. That was definitely a blustery hike, Des. I could almost feel the cold. You don't think of Spain being that cold near the Med. Were they triangulation points or random pillars Des? Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed this hike.

  9. Hi Des, It reminds me of many years ago, I drove from Granada, 30°C, to the foothills of the Mulhacen, and the temperature was below zero. A huge contrast, but as we can see in your video, a feeling of purity and psoitive solitude in this "desert" of mountains.

  10. Hello Des what an amazing hike to the top. Great accomplishment. Yes that was a little dicey on the weather, looked cold. But amazing. I hope you have been doing well. Glad you were making it safely back.

  11. Hi Des, what a beautiful landscape in Spain. It's cold in Spain in November, brr. That was almost a storm. The view was great despite the fog. Thanks. We wish you a nice rest of the week. Greetings Alex and Alex
