This place is MEKIKI CAFE&STAY in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. This is a Japanese-style youth hostel created by renovating an old Japanese house. Japanese-style? Youth hotel? What’s that? Not a hotel! It’s youth hostel. This is not a place for individual family stays like in a guesthouse or hotel.

This place is designed for guests to interact and spend time together using the shared facilities provided. I see. Even solo travelers can find connections here. For instance, this is a bar where people can enjoy drinks and engage in conversations, creating new encounters. It’s that kind of place.

Now I get it! The rooms may be simple, but the shared spaces like the living room are well-equipped with sofas and such to encourage communication! That’s right. For example, there’s also a retail corner…. and a place to enjoy coffee. Furthermore, board games and others are also provided.

There are indeed various setups designed to spark conversations. Being an old Japanese house, it naturally exudes a sense of Japanese harmony, but what I really enjoy is how the owner has stylishly integrated Western elements reflecting their personal taste. It’s comforting and exciting at the same time.
