Top 10 Things to See & Do in MADRID, SPAIN šŖšø 2024 Travel Guide
Madrid is a fascinating metropolis with an almostĀ millennium-long history. With architecturalĀ Ā marvels, world-class gastronomy, renowned artĀ museums, rich nightlife, and friendly inhabitants,Ā Ā the Spanish capital offers numerous sightsĀ and activities to please the visitor.Ā From partying at local fiestas to admiringĀ Picassoās Guernica at Reina Sofia Museum,Ā Ā
Letās take a look at the top 10 Things to See andĀ Ā Do in Madrid to get the most out ofĀ your visit to the Spanish capital. Gran Via is the most famous street in Madrid andĀ the center of retail shopping in the capital. AnyĀ Ā
International mega-brand can be found here! FromĀ grand shopping malls to eclectic luxury boutiques,Ā Ā the options are many. As a rule of thumb, IfĀ you canāt find it here it isnāt trendy enough! The avenue is also known for its richĀ entertainment and nightlife rangingĀ Ā
From charming cafes to casual restaurants andĀ fine dining, and from cinemas and theaters toĀ Ā famous nightclubs. Besides, Gran Via isĀ known as the street that never sleeps. A historic avenue like Gran Via could notĀ lack architectural interest either. Do notĀ Ā miss to pass by the emblematic buildingsĀ of the āMetropolisā and the āSchweppesā.Ā
Gran Via is cosmopolitan andĀ busy. When in Madrid It is aĀ Ā must to stroll down the avenueĀ to experience its urban vibes. Although flamenco is born in the southernĀ regions of Spain by gypsies it has becomeĀ Ā one of the symbols of Spanish musicĀ and Spanish culture in general.
Flamenco is a complex art incorporating poetry,Ā Ā guitar playing, dance, singing,Ā hand- clapping, and finger-snapping.Ā Ā It is a passionate and emotional styleĀ of dance that mesmerizes the audience. It is not a surprise that Flamenco showsĀ are popular in Madrid too. Dinner, tapas,Ā Ā
And drinks are usually served during the show,Ā making it a complete night-out experience.Ā Madrid offers a plethora of flamenco shows rangingĀ from commercial acts in big touristy venues toĀ Ā smaller and more eclectic stages focusing onĀ the quality of the performance and the artist.
Choose what best suits you and getĀ ready for some clapping and OLEEE vibes! The city of Madrid is a metropolitan areaĀ with numerous architectural masterpieces. Let’s start with the symbol building ofĀ Madrid, the emblematic Metropolis at theĀ Ā beginning of Gran Via. The building featuresĀ a prominent dome decorated with gliding leavesĀ Ā
And the statue of winged Victoria. It is oneĀ of the most photographic buildings in Madrid. 10 minutes away from the MetropolisĀ Building is the colorful Plaza Mayor. It used to be the center of oldĀ Madrid and served as the main market.Ā Ā
Plaza Mayor also used to host, among others,Ā executions, bullfights, and soccer games. Nowadays, Plaza Mayor is a touristĀ attraction, a meeting spot for locals,Ā Ā and the location of the annual Christmas market.Ā Donāt forget to pass by The Royal PalaceĀ and say hello to the royal family!Ā Ā
Well.., even though the Spanish royalsĀ donāt live here anymore the palace isĀ Ā a historic and architecturalĀ wonder that is worth visiting. Almost 2 million visitors comeĀ every year to discover its chambers,Ā Ā works of art, and unique treasures. You will be surprised to find anĀ authentic ancient Egyptian temple in the heart of Madrid.
It is a unique sight you can rarely see in Europe. The Temple of Debod was offered as a gift fromĀ the Egyptian government to Spain for their helpĀ Ā to restore other ancient temples in Egypt. TheĀ sunset view from the temple is just magical.
Madridās architecture is magnificent. ItĀ reflects Spain’s royal and aristocratic side,Ā Ā reminding you that the country used to be theĀ largest empire during the age of discovery. If you are looking for an authenticĀ activity on a Sunday morning in Madrid,Ā Ā a visit to El Rastro Flea MarketĀ will make you feel like a local.
El Rastro is Madridās oldest andĀ most traditional flea market,Ā Ā operating every Sunday and every bank holiday.Ā Located in the popular neighborhood of LaĀ Latina, the open-air market spreads alongĀ Ā Plaza de Cascorro and the streets of LaĀ Ribera de Curtidores and Ronda de Toledo.
Originally a hub for the sale of second-handĀ clothes, today the market hosts overĀ Ā 1000 merchants selling a diverse range ofĀ goods including centuries-old antiques,Ā Ā clothing, used albums andĀ magazines, and many more. But the real treasure of El Rastro isĀ its atmosphere. Above all the marketĀ Ā
Is a social gathering for MadrilenosĀ who come every Sunday to stroll, shop,Ā Ā and grab a bite at the tapas bars of La Latina. El Rastro gets crowded since it is a popularĀ attraction for locals, tourists, and pickpockets!Ā Ā To avoid any unpleasantĀ encounter with pickpockets,Ā Ā
You should keep an eye on your belongings andĀ avoid bringing to the market your valuables. A visit to Madrid would be incomplete withoutĀ exploring the Prado Museum. It is one of Spain’s most prestigious museums, hosting the finestĀ collections of European art in the world,Ā Ā
Dating back to the 12th century andĀ reaching the early 20th century. At Prado, you can enjoy, among other masterpieces,Ā the famous paintings of Goya and El Greco. A notable mention you should not miss here is an oil painting by El Greco dated around 1580 named āThe Nobleman with his Hand on his Chestā.
Reina Sofia is an internationally known museumĀ dedicated to modern Spanish art. Ā Ā Spain’s two greatest 20th-century painters, Pablo Picasso andĀ Salvador DalĆ, attract the visitorsā attention. But the museum’s highlight isĀ Picasso’s 1937 painting Guernica,Ā Ā a dramatic anti-war protest to the bombingĀ of the northern Spanish town of Guernica.Ā Ā
Make sure to read about the history ofĀ the enormous mural-sized painting beforeĀ Ā visiting. It will help you understandĀ better the symbolism of Guernica. While Prado is all about traditions,Ā Reina Sophia is about the modern sideĀ of Spanish art. But both museums are equallyĀ prestigious and renowned around the world.
It is a good idea to take advantage of the freeĀ admission policy, starting 2 hours before theĀ Ā museums close, If you are interestedĀ to see only some specific paintings.Ā Ā But since both museums are popular, they areĀ also more crowded during the last 2 hours.
Covering over 125 hectares and comprisingĀ more than 15,000 trees, El Retiro ParkĀ Ā is a green oasis in the heart of the city,Ā often nicknamed the Central Park of Madrid. El Retiro is the ideal place to escape theĀ city’s rush and bustle.
Locals spend timeĀ at the park either for walking and connectingĀ with nature or for exercising. The highlightĀ activity here is to rent a boat and enjoy a rideĀ in the artificial lake in the center of the park. El Retiro is a UNESCO World Heritage site full of sculptures, fountains,Ā gardens, and tree-lined avenues.
When visiting the park It is also worth exploring the magnificent Crystal Palace, a large glass and iron conservatory built in 1887 to host tropical floraĀ imported from the colonies of Spain. Eating Tapas is a must-try culinary experienceĀ if you want to understand better Spanish culture.Ā Ā These dishes are part of Spanish history,Ā Ā
But theyāre just as or even moreĀ relevant today than ever before. Tapas are small plates of hot or coldĀ snacks to share with other people, served with a drink, usually a beer or wine. Traditional Spanish tapas are often meat, fish,Ā and seafood-based, but they vary significantly from one region of Spain to another.
From classic tortilla de patatas and jamón serranoĀ to fried baby Squid, there is a dish for everyone. Most Spanish will go for tapas before a lateĀ dinner, while others choose them as the main meal. Consider going for a tapas crawl with friends,Ā Ā
Which will take you to a fewĀ different bars on the same night. Sharing tapas with friends is mostly considered aĀ social experience in Spain and the capital offersĀ plenty of tapas bars to choose from. So, are youĀ ready to sip, snack, socialize, pay, and repeat?
There is no better place to start your culinaryĀ trip in Madrid than Mercado de San Miguel.Ā Located next to Plaza Mayor, San MiguelĀ is Madridās first gourmet market. The market is made of a beautiful cast ironĀ frame and spreads over more than 20 stands.Ā Ā
Here you can taste the finest products from everyĀ region of Spain, ranging from tapas with freshĀ Ā fish and seafood from the Galician coast to aĀ wide variety of Iberian ham and local cheeses. Mercado de San Miguel is a cosmopolitanĀ and vibrant tourist attractionĀ Ā
Welcoming 10 million visitors every year. The market is a must-see at any time of the day. With so many things to doĀ in Madrid during the day,Ā Ā it takes strength to resist staying atĀ your hotel after dinner and rest forĀ the night.
But not going out in MadridĀ is like seeing only half of the city. Spain, in general, is famous for its partyĀ culture and fiestas, and the capital couldnātĀ lack this fame. Madrid is one of the liveliestĀ cities in Europe with renowned nightlife.
The city is divided into several areas and eachĀ one is known for specific types of entertainment.Ā Ā From the hipster area of MalasanaĀ with trendy bars and restaurants toĀ La Latina with its famous tapas barsĀ and to Chuecaās LGBTI-friendly district,Ā Ā the entertaining options are numerous.
Madrid has it all: outdoor cafes andĀ restaurants, cocktail and tapas bars,Ā Ā theaters and flamenco venues, live music,Ā and massive clubs that close in the morning! People here are outgoing and they simplyĀ love to party. Joining them and experiencingĀ Ā Madrid by night is an integral partĀ of your visit to the Spanish capital.
Madrid has an excellent cultural scene,Ā exquisite food, beautiful architecture,Ā and legendary nightlife. But itsĀ inclusive environment and friendly inhabitants are what make the city unique. So, what are your plans for your trip to Madrid?Ā Let us know in the comment section below. Thatās all for now. Donāt forget toĀ like, share, subscribe, and turn onĀ Ā

Flamenco is not popular in Madrid. Never was. On the other hand, the best artists usually work in Madrid because what they look for is being "discovered" by a recording company or an impresario. Big stars like RocĆo Jurado, Isabel Pantoja, JoaquĆn Cortes, Farruquito… were "born" in the Madrid's tablaos
awesome video thanks for sharing safe travels
Nice video, I have to say I did about half of the things (well I don't like flamenco and not crazy about paintings), but I only have been living here for year and half, so still time š
