Tuolumne Meadows is a vast, open subalpine expanse, set against the backdrop of towering peaks and rocky domes, with the Tuolumne River meandering through its heart. The Tioga Road, a 47-mile stretch between Crane Flat and Tioga Pass, offers a stunning drive through dense forests, past tranquil meadows, crystal-clear lakes, and iconic granite formations. Numerous pull-offs along the route provide sweeping, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The road typically remains open from late May or June through October or November.
Keep in mind that services such as food and water may be limited in Tuolumne Meadows during the first month after the Tioga Road opens, as well as from September until the road closes for the season.
The Tuolumne Meadows area is home to several key visitor services that enhance your experience. The Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center (open from late May to late September) features a ranger-staffed information desk, a bookstore, and engaging exhibits that explore the region’s geology, wildlife, and historical significance.
For those heading into the wilderness, the Tuolumne Meadows Wilderness Center (open from late May to mid-October) is the place to go for wilderness permits, bear canisters, maps, and guidebooks. It also offers valuable advice on pre-trip planning, Leave No Trace principles, and navigating the vast Yosemite Wilderness.
To delve into the area’s cultural and natural heritage, a visit to Parsons Memorial Lodge (open late June to early September) is a must. A short, scenic one-mile hike (about 30 minutes) from either the Lembert Dome parking area or the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center takes you to this historic site, where John Muir and Robert Underwood Johnson first envisioned the creation of Yosemite National Park.
