City of Arts and Sciences | Valencia

Città delle Arti e delle Scienze (Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències)
Imagine crossing time with only one step: from a historic center rich in medieval and renaissance heritage, you suddenly find yourself in an ultra-modern scenario, made of white structures that seem like the outputs of a science fiction movie. This is the feeling you get when entering the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, one of the most avant-garde architectural and cultural complexes in Europe.

Inaugurated in stages between 1998 and 2005, this real “citadel of knowledge” stands on the old bed of the river Turia, deviated in the fifties due to the dramatic floods that regularly afflicted the city. From a potential source of danger, that empty space has been transformed into a triumph of creativity by architect Santiago Calatrava (and in part by Félix Candela)

Within the City of Arts and Sciences we find several “stations” that are worth visiting with calm:
Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe: a large interactive museum, designed to intrigue and entertain young and old. Inside, you can experience scientific installations, discover the physics behind the flight of an airplane, observe skeletons of prehistoric animals found in the area and even “climb” a replica of the International Space Station.
Hemisfèric: its “eye” structure has become one of the symbols of Valencia. Inside there is an IMAX cinema and a planetarium, which project films and immersive experiences on stars, on the seabed or on scientific topics of great interest.
The Umbracle: an open-air pedestrian walkway, a sort of long gallery surrounded by Mediterranean plants and contemporary sculptures. Here you can relax, breathe fresh air and enjoy panoramic views of the entire City of Arts and Sciences. At nightfall, the structure lights up, giving light and reflections on the surrounding pools and water.
Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia: the impressive building dedicated to opera and classical music (and more) that stands out as a huge futuristic sculpture.

Part of the charm of this place is also given by the large pools of water surrounding the buildings: blue mirrors that amplify the scenic effect and invite you to slow down, admiring the reflections and futuristic geometries.
The connection with the Turia Gardens

Just a few steps away, you can find the Turia Gardens, a long urban park that runs through the city. It is the green lung of Valencia

Advice for the tourist
Cumulative tickets: If you want to visit more than one attraction (Science Museum, Hemisfèric and Oceanogràfic, which is next door), consider a combined ticket. It is a great solution to save money and enjoy the complex in peace.

Photography: Architectural design is incredibly photogenic. Choose a time with a special light (early morning or sunset) for postcard shots.
Relaxing at sunset: During the evening hours, the City of Arts and Sciences is coloured with warm shades and plays of light. After the visit, stop at one of the local bars for an aperitif, contemplating the complex that lights up at night.
