HUME CASTLE | GUARDIAN of the SCOTTISH Borders Through FIRE and FURY

Hume Castle, perched on a commanding hilltop in the Scottish Borders, is a prominent and evocative ruin with deep historical roots.

Originally constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century, it served as the ancestral seat of the powerful Home (or Hume) family, influential figures in Scottish politics and warfare.

Its strategic position provided expansive views across the Merse and toward the English border, making it a vital defensive stronghold during centuries of cross-border conflict.

The castle was at the heart of many military events, including its capture by English forces during the Rough Wooing in the 16th century, and its demolition by Oliver Cromwell’s army in 1650 during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.

In the late 18th century, the ruins were reimagined as a romantic folly by the Earl of Marchmont, giving the structure its distinctive crenelated silhouette. Later, during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II, the site was used as a lookout and signal station.

Hume Castle was built to defend and it had done the job. The structure is quite simple but stand strong, I see through Brett's work. Nice to see it well maintained. Always history teaches us its honorable existence even now. Great work.
