  1. American oak has a looser grain which allows for more rapid oxygenation, which is why oxidative styles like Rioja, Sherry, Port etc tend to use a portion of them. French oak has a much tighter grain which prevents oxygenation. They use 20% new oak.

  2. Visited the winery in Rioja in late September. Had all of their wines including the 2010 and 2015 Gran Reservas and liked the Ardanza the best. Bought 2 cases. I can’t think of a better wine under $40.
