SAN SEBASTIÁN SPAIN Walking Tour 4K UHD 🇪🇸 | La Concha Beach & Old Town | Europe SUMMER Destination
Opened in 1905 and named after Queen María Cristina, the bridge marked San Sebastián’s rise as a favorite summer retreat for European royalty. Inspired by Paris’s Pont Alexandre III, it features elegant details and four 17-meter obelisks crowned with sculptures. Linking the city center to the train station, it symbolized San Sebastián’s Belle Époque growth and cosmopolitan charm. Its inauguration in 1905 included a naval parade on the Urumea River and citywide celebrations. Built between 1888 and 1897, the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd was designed in Neo-Gothic style by architect Manuel de Echave. Its soaring 75-meter spire makes it the tallest building in San Sebastián, visible from many parts of the city. As the city’s main Catholic temple, it has hosted countless religious ceremonies and remains a central cultural landmark. The cathedral’s organ is one of the largest in Europe, with over 10,000 pipes producing an impressive sound. Getaria Street is named after the nearby fishing village of Getaria, birthplace of explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first man to circumnavigate the globe. Located near the Hotel María Cristina, it is one of the city’s most elegant streets, lined with stylish shops and cafés. The street became a meeting point during the Belle Époque, when San Sebastián was a fashionable resort for Europe’s elite. Getaria Street has hosted many film stars and celebrities during the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Opened in 1912, the Hotel María Cristina was designed by French architect Charles Mewès, also known for the Ritz hotels. It showcases an elegant Belle Époque design, with grand façades, ornate interiors and luxurious salons. The hotel became the preferred stay for royalty, aristocrats and Hollywood stars, especially during San Sebastián International Film Festival. During its early years, the hotel even had a direct underground passage to the nearby Victoria Eugenia Theatre. Now we are entering the Old Town, the most vibrant and historic part of San Sebastián. Its narrow pedestrian lanes are lined with pintxos bars, traditional shops and centuries-old buildings. Once rebuilt after the 1813 fire, it became the cultural and social heart of the city. The Old Town is said to have the world’s highest concentration of bars per square meter. We now arrive at the Plaza de la Constitución, the main square of San Sebastián’s Old Town. Built in the 19th century after the 1813 fire, it became the city’s civic and festive center. The balconies around the square are numbered, once used as seats for watching bullfights held here. Today, the plaza hosts major celebrations like Tamborrada, San Sebastián’s famous drumming festival. Now we are in front of the Church of Saint Vincent, the oldest temple in San Sebastián. Built in the 16th century, it represents the late Gothic style typical of the Basque region. It has long been a key religious center and houses important altarpieces and sacred artworks. Local tradition says the church was built on the site of an even older medieval chapel. Now we reach La Viña, one of the most famous pintxos bars in San Sebastián’s Old Town. Founded in the 1950s, it has become a culinary landmark for both locals and visitors. While it serves a variety of pintxos, it’s world-renowned for its Basque-style baked cheesecake. La Viña’s cheesecake recipe has been copied in restaurants around the globe, from New York to Tokyo. Now we arrive at the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Coro, one of the city’s most iconic churches. Built in the 18th century, it showcases an impressive Baroque façade with ornate details. The basilica is dedicated to the patron saint of San Sebastián and remains a key religious landmark. Its main entrance aligns perfectly with the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, creating a symbolic axis across the city, it is amazing to see this when you are there. Now we are walking along Mayor Street, one of the liveliest arteries of the Old Town. It dates back to the 16th century, when it was the city’s main thoroughfare. For centuries, processions and major civic events passed through this historic street. From here, you can see a perfect view the alignment of the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Coro and Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. Now we reach the San Sebastián City Council, housed in one of the city’s most elegant buildings. It was built in 1887 as the Gran Casino, a glamorous venue during the Belle Époque. After gambling was banned in 1924, the building was later repurposed as the City Hall. Famous guests like Mata Hari and European aristocrats once enjoyed its grand casino halls. We now arrive at the stunning La Concha Beach, the city’s most famous landmark. Shaped like a shell, it has been a symbol of San Sebastián since the 19th century. During the Belle Époque, it became a favorite summer retreat for royalty and aristocracy. La Concha was recently ranked the most beautiful urban beach in Europe.
