4K ASMR Walking Tour of Palma Cathedral, Mallorca – Spain | Gothic Masterpiece La Seu
You have stumbled on a 15 minute 4K ASMR walk in and around one of Spain’s most stunning Gothic cathedrals: Palma Cathedral. Welcome.
Also known by its full name Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca or simply La Seu, it is located in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain.
Construction started in 1229 on the site of a former mosque after King James I’s conquest. The main structures of the Cathedral took 372 years to complete – from the early 13th century to the early 17th century (1229-1601). Still then, construction didn’t stop there: finishing touches and artistic additions have continued into the 2000s.
The architecture is primarily Mediterranean Gothic, but you’ll also see influences of Renaissance, Baroque, Neogothic, and Contemporary art. In the early 1900s, renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (one of his main works being the the Sagrada Família church in Barcelona) introduced new design elements, and in the early 2000s, artist Miquel Barceló created a modern ceramic mural.
The central nave reaches a height of 44 meters (144 feet), making it one of the tallest Gothic naves in Europe, with an overall length of 121 m and width of 40 m. It’s most iconic feature is the rose window, known as the “Eye of the Gothic.” It is one of the largest in Europe which is made up of hundreds of pieces of stained glass that flood the interior with dramatic light.
Set right by the sea, La Seu is not only a masterpiece of architecture but also a powerful symbol of Palma and Mallorca – both spiritually and visually.
