Land of Castles and Wine!
[Music] hello is greg the wine traveler and today we’re exploring several wineries in spain you might see my other videos about wines from aro rioja and other places but today i’m covering both rioja and aro spain is all about wine also otto’s not very far from san sebastian that place is so beautiful you gotta go there when you’re coming in from the north and you get off at avenida yeah you’re going to see there’s about six wineries there’s vigneton donias i did a video on them gomez cruzados there’s muga and others and one of them is called the first one we’re going to try is the vina 2011 it’s a reserva you can tell by the brown label on the back wow you can really see that it has aged there’s some brick color there the aroma has got that earthiness to it but it’s not very fruity at all definitely something like leather or chocolate i’m getting out of there yep this is a 2011 it seems to me it’s lost most of its fruitiness and i just get that earthy uh flavor a little bit woody the next wine is 2014 grand reserva you could look for the blue stamp on the back that’s how you know both of these wines are tempranillo which are [Music] very earthy in their characteristic not not very fruity at all the aroma coming off of this wine is a little bit like pumpkin spice i’m almost thinking of something like a baked fruit pie of some sort the fruit’s not coming at me but it certainly is earthy it’s a deep wine full of complexity and flavor if you’re into food and wine san sebastian has a tapas scene that might be the best in the world next we’re going to fincavia creses which is in the town of quintanilla it’s right outside wyodaleed is a fantastic city it’s an academic city and they have some really cool restaurants the other thing about fincavilla crea says if you get to go there it’s the castle peninsula is right down the road just a few miles from the ramparts of the castle you get a good view of the valley the first wine is the finca villa creses ribera de duero 2016. it’s mostly tempranillo but it has cabernet sauvignon and some merlot to round it out let’s give it a try this wine has got a deep garnet almost purple uh hue to it let’s give it a whiff definitely earthy leathery like i would expect from a tempranillo let’s give it a taste it really rounds it out with the cabernet and then merlot in there this wine is wonderful the next wine i have is the finca viga cresas cruno 2018 it is mostly tempranillo like most ribera de duero wines are but it’s got some cabernet sauvignon in it let’s give it a try wow it has a very deep color the aroma oh i’m really getting a lot more earthiness but also some other forest aromas coming off of there [Music] it’s very deep in terms of its smell and complex the flavor is not fruit forward it is obviously a european wine well-rounded got some tannins in there and there’s some acidity in there but really the fruit plays a background role but it’s definitely in here and i don’t think you could get that with just the tempranillo alone well not so much as you can with this one and a 2018 it is it is tasting wonderfully right now so if you can find some i would buy it excellent the next winery is portia it’s a big winery it’s beautiful and it’s right off the main freeway the a1 from burgos to madrid also about an hour from pena field both the winery tasting are 2016. this is the roberto de duero crianza in ribera de duero the guard rating system like they do in rioja it’s similar the crianza doesn’t have as much time in the barrel but this one’s a 2016 so it’s got about six years all together it has that tempranillo rich perfumey earthy dried fruit tobacco there’s fruit in there but it’s not fruit forward at all the flavor is fantastic there’s some acidity in there but not so much and it’s balanced with the tannins it’s a balanced wine i think it’s excellent the next wine from portia that we’re going to try is the prima tempranillo 2016 ribera de duero this is a cosecha it had a little bit more time in the barrel so let’s give it a try the color is really dark it’s a nice garnet but a little bit of brownness to it the aroma is very similar to the other one less fruit [Music] a little bit more subtle than the other one the flavor has rounded out a little bit the tannins are not so strong but they’re definitely there i think this wine is at the peak of its prime that’s my opinion definitely a very excellent tempranillo from rivera de duero and there you have it three wineries in spain using tempranillo from rioja they’re all different and in my opinion tempranillo is underrated in the united states and so are spanish wines they’re really good and as i always say la vita e bella to your health salud [Music] [Music] you
