Chasing waterfalls in Yosemite? You might need to hurry up…. | ✨ Paid partnership with NPCA
This is Euseite Falls. Usually one of the tallest and most powerful waterfalls in North America. But if you’re visiting during late summer or fall, you might be surprised to see them look more like this instead. And that’s because these waterfalls are fed almost entirely by snowpack that accumulates in the high Sierra. The Sierra Nevada snowpack, the lifeblood of California, is disappearing. It supplies about 60% of California’s fresh water and nearly 75% of the water used to grow the food that feeds the nation. But as temperatures rise due to climate change in the Sierra, more winter storms are falling as rain instead of snow. That means less snow stored in the high Sierra back country. And when little snow does fall, it’s melting faster and draining earlier than it used to. In fact, scientists project up to a 64% loss in Sierra snowpack by the end of this century. In Yeusede, that means waterfalls are drying up earlier every year. Parched meadows, stressed forests, and dwindling rivers downstream mean visitors can expect this instead of this. If we want to protect Yusede’s waterfalls, forests, and the communities that depend on them, we need to take action now. The National Parks Conservation Association is working to make our national parks more resilient to climate change. Learn how you can help protect Yusede and the Sierra through the info below.
Yosemite’s waterfalls are drying up — and it’s not just bad luck, it’s climate change. 💧
The fight to protect Yosemite kicked off a national conservation movement and led to the creation of the National Park Service. Yosemite still needs protecting, this time from climate change.
Extreme weather like drought and historic winter storms, less precipitation falling as snow in the high sierra, and pollution all threaten this beloved national park. If we want to protect this park’s iconic falls, then it starts with protecting its water sources.
Climate change is threatening to change our iconic national parks and national scenic trails forever. This year, I’m exclusively partnering with @NpcaOrg as I explored the PCT and the national parks it runs through. NPCA is fighting to protect our parks, and the gateway communities around them, but they need our help. Climate change is a scam.
