The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official royal palace of Spain and one of the most impressive historic buildings in Europe. Located in the heart of Madrid beside Plaza de Oriente and near the Almudena Cathedral, it serves primarily as a ceremonial and cultural site rather than a residence for the royal family.

The palace was built between 1738 and 1764 after a fire destroyed the earlier Alcázar fortress that had stood on the site. The new palace was commissioned by Philip V of Spain, the first Bourbon king of Spain, who wanted a grand stone palace that would reflect the power of the monarchy and prevent future fires. It was first occupied by Charles III of Spain, who made it the main royal residence.

With more than 3,400 rooms and covering about 135,000 square meters, it is the largest functioning royal palace in Western Europe. Inside, visitors can see lavish halls decorated with frescoes, tapestries, chandeliers, and works by famous artists such as Goya and Velázquez. Highlights include the Throne Room, the Royal Armoury, and the royal banquet halls.

Today, the Spanish monarch Felipe VI lives elsewhere, but the palace is used for official ceremonies, state receptions, and public visits. It remains a powerful symbol of Spain’s royal history and cultural heritage.
