A Day of Lakes in the Sierra Nevada! Wild Day Hike to Gilbert, Matlock, Flower and Bench Lakes!

Embark on a breathtaking Sierra Nevada hike with me to Gilbert, Matlock and Flower Lakes. Starting from Onion Valley Trailhead, we follow the Kearsarge Pass trail to a series of serene alpine lakes, where the tranquil waters mirror the snowcapped majesty of Sierra Nevada peaks.

But the adventure doesn’t end there. An unexpected cross-country detour leads us to the hidden gem of Bench Lake, nestled below majestic University Peak. Join me for an unforgettable adventure, where nature’s artistry knows no bounds.

Trailhead elevation: 9176 ft (2797 m)

  1. That was so much fun, thank you!!! This is the first video I have seen of yours. I loved it. Your narration is so fun and your photography is amazing! What an amazing adventure. I have been planning a trip to that area in the near future and I can't wait to experience it first hand.

  2. Yes they killed all the fish in Matlock Lake due to the yellow leg frog being endangered. The fish fed on the frogs. Too bad that was my favorite place to fish and camp. I had been backpacking there since 1967. All those years l don't recall seeing those frogs even at Bench Lake. Flower and Gilbert still have Trout in them. Maybe Heart lake on the pass still has trout.

  3. This is the video I’ve been looking for! I’ve read a couple reviews about Bench Lake but hadn’t seen any high quality videos. Thank you 🙂 we’re heading up to Onion Valley for the 4th of July.
