Spain Might Demolish a Neighborhood for This Church 🏛️ #travel #architecture
After 144 years of construction, Spain’s Sagrada Familia
just became the tallest church in the world — but to
finish Gaudí’s original vision, they might have to
demolish hundreds of homes. 🏛️
In February 2026, the central Tower of Jesus Christ was
finally completed, reaching 172.5 meters. But there’s
still one massive obstacle: the Glory Façade entrance
staircase. To build it, two entire residential blocks in
Barcelona may need to be torn down — potentially evicting
between 3,000 and 15,000 local residents.
Some neighbors argue the staircase wasn’t even part of
Gaudí’s original plans (his sketches were destroyed in
a 1936 fire during the Spanish Civil War). Others say
the Sagrada Familia must finish what it started — even
if it means displacing an entire community.
Pope Leo XIV is set to inaugurate the new Tower of Jesus
on June 10, 2026, marking 100 years since Gaudí’s death.
Would you bulldoze a neighborhood for a masterpiece?

absolutely
Quick fact: the Sagrada Familia just officially became the world’s tallest church on October 30, 2025, surpassing Germany’s Ulm Minster (which held the record since 1890). The full inauguration of the Tower of Jesus is scheduled for June 10, 2026 — the exact 100-year anniversary of Antoni Gaudí’s death. He was hit by a tram on his way to confession in 1926, and only 25% of the basilica was finished at the time. Would you go to the inauguration? 🏛️
This was planned from the very start, the people that bought the homes knew this would happen, it was in the contract
they got the homes right in front of one of the most famous buildings in the world for dirt cheap knowing full well it was temporary
Not only that, but all of them will be relocated to new homes apparently, so it literally is not an issue whatsoever
