San Sebastián The Concha bay & Miramar palace.

It is then, when in San Sebastián everything just… opens up.

You’re walking through quiet streets, maybe thinking about your next pintxo, and suddenly the view appears. A perfect bay, soft golden sand, elegant buildings, and the ocean gently curving like it was designed on purpose.

That moment begins at the top of a small hill. Miramar Palace, a royal balcony over the sea

Standing in front of Miramar Palace, you might think you’ve somehow landed in England.

That’s not by accident.

This palace was built in 1893 as a summer residence for Queen María Cristina of Spain. She chose San Sebastián to escape the intense heat of Madrid, and soon the entire royal court followed. For a few months each year, this quiet fishing town became the center of Spanish high society.

The design, by an English architect, explains the Tudor-style details. It feels more like a countryside manor than a Mediterranean palace.

But the real magic is not the building. Walk to the front of the palace. The gardens open up, and suddenly you’re standing on one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Spain. The palace sits right between two beaches, like a natural balcony over the bay.

I’ve been here many times, and I still slow down every single time I reach that edge.

From the gardens, your eyes naturally follow the curve of La Concha Bay.

It’s almost too perfect.

The name “La Concha” means “the shell,” and once you see it from above, it makes complete sense. The bay forms a smooth, elegant arc, protected by Santa Clara Island right in the middle.

This isn’t just a beach. It’s part of daily life. In the morning, you’ll see people walking along the promenade. At midday, swimmers and families fill the sand. In the evening, the light softens and everything turns golden.

There’s a calmness here that’s hard to explain until you experience it.

Listen to the waves, watch how locals move without hurry, and notice how the city and the sea feel completely connected. San Sebastián has elegance, but it’s never loud about it. It doesn’t try to impress you. It simply shows you beauty, quietly, and lets you take it in at your own pace.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need when we travel.

If you can picture yourself standing on that hill, looking out over the bay, then you’re already starting to experience Spain in a deeper way.
