Today we are heading to Barcelona in Catalunya, in the North East of Spain. We are visiting the church of La Sagrada Familia Construction began in 1882. and Antoni Gaudi took over as chief architect a year later. He worked on it until his death in 1926 It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The cranes are here because it is still under construction It is currently expected to be completed around the year 2040 Entrance and Tower access is €36 Tickets can only be bought online (sagradafamilia.org) Let’s go inside this stunning church

The style of the Sagrada Família is variously likened to Spanish Late Gothic, Catalan Modernism and Art Nouveau The branching columns are designed to give the appearance of a lush forest The central nave vaults reach forty-five metres

In 2010 the uncompleted church was consecrated for religious worship and designated as a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI. The stairs inside the towers are easy to climb up, if a little claustrophobic But, the view is worth it! Time to head back down. Look away now if you suffer from vertigo!

Guided by drawings made by Gaudi, it was sculpted by a team led by Josep Maria Subirachs There is also a museum of Plans, original sketches and reconstructed models This is a portrait of Antoni Gaudi sculpted by Josep Subirachs and this is a reconstruction of Gaudi’s on-site studio
