10 Things I HATE about Living in Mallorca, Spain
So I have been living in Majorca now since 2005 and while there are just so many brilliant things about living here on the islands there are also some things as well that aren’t so fantastic so if you are thinking about moving to the islands there are a few issues that
I just want to make you aware of now I’ve saved my pet hates for right at the end of this video so make sure you go ahead and check that out I also have an article on my website on majorcaunderthesun.com so make sure you check that out too it has more
Information but for now let’s check out the top 10 things that I don’t particularly like about living here on the islands Now I’m going to State the obvious here that Mallorca is really a holiday Island it’s completely geared towards tourism and you’re going to find it very very different scenes over here during the summer months than you would do in the winter now this could be a problem for
Many people who come over here to live they might not quite expect to see many of their favorite holiday results just looking so empty but these popular holiday Resorts literally turn into ghost towns over the winter months and as you can see behind me you can see a
Very very empty son Matia speech yes there are a few people in the water there are a few people out walking but for some people this isn’t really what they signed up for when they come over here to live in Mallorca that said though and I have to say as a resident
Here I absolutely love these months I love being able to walk along long empty beaches and I love being able to enjoy these resorts on a very very a different level than you ever would do during the summer too and this is exactly what I mean now normally during the summer months you
See the ferries coming in to take tourists out on sightseeing trips now I see a family having their lunch by the harbor which is actually a really cool thing to do you can see all the businesses here are closed up so we’ve got the Diving Center here got some
Really popular bars that of course you’re going to know and love I’m just outside the Scotsman here that’s shut up for the season too and all the other bars just along this pier too but we’re gonna head on down towards some matches Beach and I’m going to keep telling you about the things
That I’m not so keen on about living here in Mallorca so the next thing I’m going to talk about is that everything has got so expensive here on the islands whether you’re eating out or whether you’re shopping in the supermarket now I’m going to have more information coming
Out about this as we go on through the month but really I guess an increase in the price of living is something that’s been experienced worldwide and globally as well and I’ve just got back from the UK and was absolutely horrified to see the cost of food and the cost of living
As well in the UK so I guess that’s something that has happened across the board but Mallorca is no longer a really cheap place to live foreign so I’m going to ask you to hit that subscribe button if you are thinking of coming to move out here to Majorca
Because coming up later on this month I have my first sponsored video I’m doing it in partnership with a legal firm here in Parma you can actually help you move out here if you’re from one of these third countries so from the UK or the USA and we’re going to go through all
The options of how you can move over here so make sure you turn on that notification spell to to make sure you do not miss out on that video okay so let’s head on on to a son Matia speech okay so another downside to living here is point number three and that’s working
At freelance here on the islands now it’s not just working freelance it’s actually about having a career and I did actually mention this in my pros and cons of living in Majorca video which I made I think it’s a couple of years ago now but it still stands but it has
Changed slightly now if you are prepared to go freelance working out here I have to say it’s not an easy ride it’s very very difficult because you do have very very high costs to pay every month with Social Security and also with tax regardless of how much you earn to and
Regardless also whether you are ill or not you still have to pay that kind of money also looking back at my old video as well having a career here on the island is also very very difficult bear in mind that you are up against many Islanders here you’re up against myokin
Businesses so maybe it’s going to be harder to get yourself promoted through these big corporate companies some people have made it some people have made success of it but just to let you know it can be very very difficult but that said though since the pandemic working life has changed over here in
Mallorca and it of course has become more of a trend now to work from home so you’re no longer limited to just finding work on the islands now I’m personally registered with other companies in the UK I can actually work for companies in the UK and overseas with the whole work
From home culture as well you can easily pick up freelance work and you’ll no longer dependence on companies here on the island to pay your wages okay we’re just taking a very quick break here I can see someone just coming out of the water I’ve got to say this
May be about things I hate about living in Mallorca but walking along this beach on the gorgeous January day isn’t one of them okay so Point number four we’re going to talk about a property and how incredibly difficult it is to find somewhere to live here on the islands because demand
Really is outstripping Supply now in recent years and I’m sure this has been the case for many places around the world as well it’s not just a Majorca but the house prices have really shot up here whether you’re finding somewhere to rental whether you’re finding somewhere
To buy now I think measures are going to be put in place by the governments in that they’re going to try and restrict sales to overseas investors to actually allow people to even afford to buy a property here or even afford to find somewhere to rent but just be warned if
You are looking to come out here that finding an available property is going to be tricky it is going to be expensive too foreign Number five is a very hot topic here in Mallorca and it’s all about the education now many families who do move out here do you find that the public education isn’t quite as International as they may have thought because the public schools do teach primarily in Catalan now those seeking more of an
International Education to be able to learn in English and Spanish and Catalan and German and French are more suited maybe to getting a place in an international school now these international schools places have really become hard to come by in the past few years in fact when my daughter was small
It’s very very easy to get a place in an international school now it’s not so easy so my recommendation here and this is just a top tip if you’re thinking of moving to the islands is to get your child’s name down on one of these waiting lists as soon as you know that
You’re going to move here because you could be in for a long wait in order to get a place but our international schools any better than Local Schools well that’s completely a subjective question it’s down to personal choice I’ve known families have gone through the public system and their children have gone on
To live very very successful and happy lives and they’ve been completely multilingual same goes as well for those at International Schools as well they’ve been able to go to university live all over the world so once again whatever decision you may make about your child’s education you know that they’re going to
Grow up in a very enriching environment it’s a very multinational environment as well and it’s going to be just a very very diff difference so probably the kind of education you’re experiencing back home at the moment okay so my next point about living here in Majorca is about friendships that you
Have on the islands now I have covered this in more detail in my book called living in Mallorca under the sun which you can now buy on Amazon and I shall leave a link to that in the description text below this video but yeah if you’re
Coming over here to live just be aware that there’s a constant recycling of friends they come into the island they leave the islands they may come back and they may go again but it’s very very hard to have a solid group of friends who just never leave it’s something that
Happens every few years you get this recycling effect you become really good friends with with the families or with people and then they’re off and you never see them again so once again that’s just something to bear in mind if you come to live here on the island foreign Number seven and that is all about driving here in Majorca now it does seem a little bit strange to be talking about driving when I’m walking along this very long empty Beach quite peacefully but this is really one of the number one things that I absolutely hate about
Living here now it can be very chaotic on the roads you can be taking your life into your own hands when you jump into a car you do get used to it I have to say you do get used to driving here but it’s not really one of my favorite things to
Do also parking can be very very difficult in the city as well if you’re going into Palmer sometimes it’s very very hard to find a parking place too but that said in 2023 going on buses and trains is now going to be absolutely free for all Island residents now what
Country could possibly promise this and deliver as well I mean this is an incredible development for anyone living here in Mallorca we just need to get our Intermodal cards or Palmer citizen cars but we are going to be able to enjoy free transports throughout the year here
In Majorca which is just fantastic news it means I can now leave my car at home if I want to I can jump onto any bus that I like as well and guess about the islands So in theory the whole idea of traveling around on public transport for
Absolutely free is just fantastic for everybody living here but what’s the reality going to be like in the summer now we’re going to see very different scenes here in just a few months when tourists start to arrive in the resorts we’re going to see the bus stops getting
Very very busy and it’s not going to be so easy to get around which is one of the things I don’t necessarily like very much about living here in Mallorca now in the summer months those bus timetables do go to pots slightly everything goes out the window because
With the increase of Tourism here on the islands we do find that many buses do pass by some of these bus stops completely full and we heard reports that last summer of tourists having to wait for absolutely ages to get a bus so it’ll be really great if we hear there’s
Going to be even more Supply this summer let’s watch that’s this space on that one and hopefully I have some good news to report as we go on in through the season and this busyness also extends not just to buses and the likelihood of continuing to have packed buses over the
Summer but also just life in general and it being packed everywhere on the island during the summer and that can be just a pain for people living here it’s often hard to find a table in a really popular restaurant you have to book ages in advance the beaches are packed
Everything gets really really busy and after you’ve been here for a few years some people just do not like the summer months on the islands but at the same time this is still a great opportunity if you’re living here to just get off it go to Northern Europe go to summer in
The UK or in Sweden where you’re going to really have a fantastic time it’s going to be a lot cooler up north and this is a great time to leave and leave the tourists to enjoy the really high temperatures in Mallorca while you also take a break as well
Okay so we’re just coming to the ends of son Matia speech here so I’m going to tell you about the main thing that I absolutely hate about living here in Majorca and that is about family now I’m not saying I hate my family quite the opposite because if you do make the
Decision to come over here to live in Mallorca then just be aware that you are going to be cutting yourself off from your family unless you’re welcome to join them here on the islands or they will come and join you in the future now as we all know that the cost of low-cost
Flights over the years has shot up but considerably they’re no longer as cheap as they used to be so being able to actually go and see your family has become more expensive than ever and particularly if you’re working out here as well just be aware too that you’re
Going to have a limited amount of holiday if you are working for a company so that’s going to make catching up with your family even harder that said though this is a great place to live because you will soon become the most popular person in your family because everyone
Will want to come out and see you every everyone will want to come out and visit you as well and as I’ve mentioned in my book as well it’s so easy to stay in touch with people living out here because well everyone comes on holiday to Majorca eventually and it’s really
Really nice that you get to see so many people that you haven’t seen for absolutely years living here New Yorker then this year maybe the year for you to make your dreams come true if you want to find out more about the pros and cons of living on the islands then do check out this video appearing here on YouTube don’t forget to hit that subscribe button because my video all
About moving to Majorca will be coming out very soon on my channel wishing you all the very best of luck and wishing you all a very happy New Year goodbye for now
Living in Mallorca isn’t always perfect, so here are 10 things I HATE about living in Mallorca, Spain from how expensive the island has become to working in Mallorca and buying and renting property in Mallorca.
I’ll also look at the controversial issue of schools in Mallorca and how hard it can be to get a school place to over tourism and overcrowding in Mallorca during the Summer months.

You can read more about things I hate about living in Mallorca – and I've added another 5 to my website article here: https://mallorcaunderthesun.com/things-i-hate-about-living-in-mallorca/
Winter is my favourite time to visit for a holiday. Deserted roads and beaches, no queues in Supermarkets.
As long as you can find somewhere to rent with heating then winter is a great time for a quiet holiday walking in the mountains or along deserted beaches.
I just love it and so does my wife.
Mallorca is no longer a really cheap place to live 🙁 #FACT
It is no big thing to avoid the tourist packed bits in Mallorca during the main season (although it's slowly creeping in at the mountains too). As regards buses, they are perpect if one avoids to travel at the tourists hours after 9:30 am and before 7 pm. You would go for pinchos before 8:30 pm either, when they have left. That said in the only-tourist towns on the coast, the ones deserted off season, you'll have problems to get on a bus – but who on earth goes there in the season). Happy new year to you too..
Rent shot up. Can't find anything under 2500€ and they want so much paperwork. Like I can get a mortgage with less paperwork than what they ask.
School is cool. Agora is tops.
But real estate is bonkers. Basic 3 bed apartment – 500k. Basic house with a pool and parking – 1 mill. Anything really cool 3+mill.
Oh and taxes went up. Self employed 30.6-50% with all the fees.
Think might move to Marbella
Everytime I have been to Mallorca it always rains but you did show the hotel I stayed in so thanks for that
i love the winter here!!!
Thank you so much for such a genuine and honest video.
The videos you make are all so excellent and informative.
I went to Majorca 3 times last summer. Feels odd to watch your last few videos as I stayed in cala bona in the hotel Alicia and then in the Fergus style Tobago which you are outside here. I hope the Olive Tree was open for you, an absolutely fantastic restaurant
What abaut work in the winter?, or do you need to safe enough to last for a couple of months?
Im a sous-chef and i got asked alot to work in mallorca but its for 7 months a year. I'l have to live there i cant get away for 7 months.
Are you insane? If you hate it that much move back to the UK – it's so much better here (NOT). This is a whiny annoying video.
Thank you.🙂. I live here and I still can live with these things together. I don't earn 2000€ a month but still can live like a queen! Compare this lifestyle to the countries of east side of europe I have a golden life! 😁😍
Where ever you move to in this world there is always a government controlling you. There are likes and dislikes in every country so why people go on about life instead of just living life is beyond me
I love the Winter in Mallorca, best time, quiet!!
To Many colonialist in the island, and this type of videos encourage the growth of colonialism… Then the Young local people can't buy a home, while the British and German don't stop coming and buying. And the worst of all, on the end, most of then don't integrate with local society, instead learning spanish they force you to speak their languages perfecto… Now to sell apartments, clothes and furniture you must know languages… When they are businesses outside of tourism. It's crazy!!
cada día tengo que buscar parking en palma centro para ir a trabajar y no me parece tan inconveniente como para ponerlo en punto negativo🤦♂
You can make : 50 things that i hate from Ibiza and 1.000.000 that i hate from Formentera (believe me) 🤣
Try visit Key West Florida it's so beautiful there
Blame Brexit, every salty remoaner does
Winter in Mallorca is fantastic. The risc of a drunk British falling over you from a balcony is reduced to 0%.
The only problem as a business owner is the winter months can feel a really long time not having any income…
Great video! I'm moving to Mallorca in march… Got all my documents sorted last week and found a place to live close to work.. can't wait to move there!
Jo de Mallorca només hi ha una cosa que me molesti, i és que mos destrosseu s'illa i no vos en doneu ni compte.
What is the nicest resort to stay at with the nicest beaches and hotels? Thank you.
Yes, very dead in winter and weather not great. But still beautiful and still get sunshine, though can be quite cold, rainy, and windy. Affordability is a problem. Cost of living is high with most things imported. Renting is a nightmare these days. Very glad I left when I did.
Lol, the driving had me in tears it is so bad never renting a car on the island again! Public transport is very good as well, so it's fine apart from face masks, but I don't know if they are inforcing it still?
I am a Spaniard and Mallorca is really one of the greatest places in Spain. I have been there in November and December besides summer, and some days the weather reminded me of Miami in winter (where I lived 5 years). I know the other Balearic islands too and my favourite is Menorca (not for living 365 days), but Mallorca has also La Sierra de Tramontana. Those mountains are a great place for hiking. By the way, once I had to drive along it with a quite thick layer of snow, so not all winter days are as in Miami.
I understand this video is meant for a British audience, but I did not understand why "Friendship" is a problem. You can also make local friends, which won't move away. Is it difficult to approach locals in Mallorca?
how do poor people survive in malorca?
Another one is the parking habits, one idiot parked 5 cm from my rental car leaving paint scratch although there other free parking space i Soller.
How much is the average rent? Is it more expensive than the nordis?
I need to watch other videos you have done ,but most of things you mention ,cost of living , housing, etc is the same in u.k. it’s March and temperature is 2c , and brexit in u.k. has made life difficult. If I was thinking of moving to majorca , it’s research, research, research…. And looking for a location away from the coast ,even though I love the beach .
Good points: Mallorca is popular in large part because you can get there quickly in just over two hours from London for example. You can get pretty much everything in the shops if you have the money. Sunshine in winter is always good and beaches are nice (though quite dirty these days). Beautiful views of mountains, beaches, etc. Bad points: Winters are cold and humid and most properties are not insulated and often have no heating or A/C, huge lack of respect that I have not experienced anywhere else in the world (currently in Alicante which is such a huge contrast as people here are very kind, friendly, and welcoming towards foreigners), high level of xenophobia, greed, sleaze (many very sleazy characters, drug dealers, etc, extremely dodgy, greedy, and dishonest landlords). Attracts all kinds of people, but that includes a high proportion of sleazy types. Terrible driving, disrespect on roads, swearing and obscene gestures made by many drivers towards pedestrians. Dog poop all over pavements and even on beaches. Highly transient place, people often stay for a few years and leave. Making genuine friends in Mallorca is very tough. Often people will befriend you because they think they can get something from you. Many ´users ´around. Food prices and cost of accommodation only going up every year.
Very helpful video I am planning on spending slightly longer times out there.
Annoying video
Living in meyorker
Then don't come to Mallorca and stay in your country. Nobody asked you to come. The Island and its locals and the enviroment will greet it.
R house prices dropping in the area now? Been on holidays there a few times and looking to buy , just wondering if u have noticed , thanks
I lived in mallorca forc30byears and today I still have friends on the island who I am in contact withbto this day.
Palma it's a ripoff and boring
Thank you for this. Fallen in love with the place and heavily considering the move in the near future. I think the partying aspect really is subject to where you go in Mallorca. Palma Nova for instance can be just as busy in peak period and I would consider that area second in line to Magaluf with regards to partying, apologies if I am wrong that's just the impression I got.
The cost of living aspect I believe has drastically changed, I found it a lot cheaper there compared to the UK now. Completely agreed with the car travel and public transport aspect. Its non existent in peak times.
Too many Brits?
Great vlog 😊 what made u want to move to Spain 🇪🇸
Appreciated the vide..Youre super nice.
I lived in Cala dOr for nearly 18 years and couldn't wait for the 31st of October.
Hi thanks for your videos I am thinking of a jump from uk to Mallorca with my family my children are 10 an 2 years old , any advice as we are nervous to do but want to change our life due to to much control in the uk and we want to live and enjoy family time more any advice would be great we are looking at moving in the late summer thanks
If you hate Mallorca so much, go to your gray, rainy, sad island, and don't forget, the English are no longer welcome on my island to live permanently. Remember that "Brexit means Brexit?" Well, here, we only want you for vacations; go to your disgusting island. Kisses from Mallorca.
