Simple question: What causes plates to move in the first place? Is it the "pulling" of plate material as it sinks below the upper plate? Or is it being "pushed" by hot magma from beneath that is flowing like an ocean current? Or is the spreading of the ocean floor "pushing" the rest of the plate along?

Sort of .. but this is incomplete. It's missing more processes, significant ones that contribute to what you see today.
Continental crust is lighter which is why the heavy, colder, denser oceanic crust subducts under it.
