Chopin – Prelude in D-flat Major, Op. 28 No. 15 ‘Raindrop’

This prelude is part of Chopin’s Op. 28 set of 24 preludes, each in a different key, composed between 1835 and 1839. The ‘Raindrop’ nickname wasn’t given by Chopin himself, but by George Sand, his partner, who imagined the repeated A-flat notes as the sound of raindrops falling during a storm in Majorca. The piece moves from a peaceful opening to a dramatic middle section, reflecting Chopin’s Romantic sensibility and emotional range.

Frédéric Chopin composed much of his Prelude in D-flat Major, Op. 28 No. 15 (‘Raindrop’) during the winter of 1838–1839, while staying at the Royal Charterhouse of Valldemossa, a former Carthusian monastery in the village of Valldemossa, located in the Tramuntana mountains of Majorca (Mallorca), Spain. He and his partner, the French writer George Sand, rented Cell No. 4 in the monastery, which consisted of three small rooms and a terrace. The weather during their stay was cold, damp, and stormy — conditions that worsened Chopin’s tuberculosis but also inspired the mood of several preludes, including the ‘Raindrop’.

This monastery, nestled in the Tramuntana mountains of Mallorca, is where Chopin composed several of his Op. 28 Preludes, including the famous ‘Raindrop’ Prelude. The cell he shared with George Sand is now a museum, preserving his piano, manuscripts, and personal items.
