San Sebastián – A foodie’s paradise

I am in Europe Visiting the Basque Country The Basque people have a unique culture And speak a language that has no link to any other languages in the world The Basque Country spans across Spain and France I am crossing to the Spanish side from Bayonne to San Sebastián San Sebastián is the cultural center of Basque And is famous for its foods I’ve signed up for a food tour Can’t wait! I am leaving Bayonne Catching a train to Hendaye at the French-Spanish border And change to Basque Railway to San Sebastián The Basque Railway station is just outside Come on, the train is already here This river separates France and Spain We’re in Spain! Arriving in Amara-Donostia Station Donostia is the Basque name of San Sebastián The city is a major tourist destination And a paradise for foodies The most famous food is pintxos Pintxos are small snacks usually on a stick My food tour tonight will take me to 6 pintxos bars A pintxo and a drink at each bar I’ve waited years for this! Besides pintxos, San Sebastián has majestic churches too This is San Sebastián Cathedral Built in 1888, it’s the largest cathedral in the region Urumea river flows through San Sebastián The beautiful Victoria Eugenia Theater stands on its bank There are 3 beautiful beaches in San Sebastián This is Zurriola Beach And this is La Concha Beach There’s a regatta going on So many people are watching the regatta Or maybe just enjoying the view The old town is where people come for pintxos There are over 200 bars and restaurants! In the middle of old town is Basilica of Santa Maria Built in 1774 in luxurious Baroque style With a tortured Saint Sebastian watching people from above My food tour is starting Gandarias is the first pintxos bar of the night We begin with the original pintxo Anchovy, olive and pepper on a stick It goes well with Txakoli, a Basque white wine Second dish is this super delicious stuffed pepper Oh my god look at this! We are headed to the second pintxos bar This one specializes in mussels The bar offers many mussel dishes But we must try Basque Cider first Wow it takes some skills! It aerates the drink and entertains everyone Now we are trying jamón ibérico I always love jamón ibérico de bellota! From pigs that only ate acorns Check this out! Hmmm so good! Next is a famous pintxos restaurant I am trying its award-winning pintxo Wow the beef is so tender We’re not done yet The guide took us to another pintxos restaurant I am getting more beef Beef cheek with mashed potato And nice Rioja wine OK this is the last pintxos bar of the tour We’re getting desserts My French toast is very sweet And of course more alcohol This is patxaran, to help us digest The tour has finished But look at the Basque cheesecakes There’s always room in the stomach for more desserts! It’s past 10pm But the old town is still full of people and their laughter No wonder San Sebastián attracts so many tourists Nice beaches, historical buildings World-class cuisines But I think most of all an atmosphere that’s welcoming and relaxing Tomorrow I am going to explore the nearby cities around San Sebastián Stay tuned!

San Sebastián is the cultural center of Basque Country. It’s also famous for its cuisines – the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants. I’ve signed up for a Pintxos food tour.
