Thousand Island Lake Adventure | Epic Backpacking Trip in the Sierra Nevada Mountains | Documentary

[Music] [Music] Hidden deep within California’s Sierra Nevada
mountains lies one of the crown jewels of the John Mir Trail. Thousand Island Lake. Surrounded
by jagged peaks and beautiful alpine meadows, this magical place feels like something out of
a dream. The lake was filled with many islands and lots of wind as we had to brave the elements
and hike nearly 8 m through the wilderness to get to this beautiful location. Hey, what’s up? I’m
Chris, the creator of the videos and music here at Shred Vision. And this thousand island lake
adventure has been on my bucket list for years due to the beauty of the lake, the unique design
with the many different islands, and even reading about John Mir talking about this specific area
being one of his favorites. The logistics to start this hike is one of the parts that causes a lot
of problems. Uh the road out of Mammoth Lakes, California, leading into Agne Meadows has been
under construction for about the last 5 years. I got wilderness permits for the river trail. So,
uh, I had read that that was one of the easier trails to do. It was a little bit more shaded
compared to the other options. Yeah, it turned out to be a really difficult trail. About halfway
through it starts to go up and you start to hit a lot of different switchbacks. Gets very difficult
and it really makes getting into this beautiful lake that much more worth it. We even had some
help from some friends on our last day uh that ended up saving the day on our trip. So, yeah, it
was really an adventure all around. We just ended up winging it and going for it. We knew there
was going to be some problems with the logistics. I’ve wanted to do this hike now for years and I
wasn’t going to let anything stop me on this one. Friday night, we packed up our bags, left Fresno
to Yoseite National Park to meet our buddy Josh who works there. We stayed in his room. Got
up early Saturday morning to head into Mammoth Lakes area where we talked to the rangers about
our trail options and how the shuttle bus would work and what our logistics would be for when we
came out during the week. Josh ended up tweaking his back that Saturday and me and Griff ended
up camping in the wilderness for Saturday night. We woke up early Sunday morning to get
ready for day one of our hike where we’d catch the shuttle bus and get ready to take
the river trail up to Thousand Island Lake. [Music] Day one, we woke up and got our things
together. As we left our wilderness campsite, we had to make our way to Mammoth Village
to catch a shuttle to Ag New Meadows, the start of our River Trail trail trail head
and the trail that would take us to Thousand Island Lake. We’re at the trail head right
now and uh just getting ready to start our hike on the river trail heading to Thousand
Island Lake. Um today’s day one of the hike, but we’ve spent the last couple of days preparing
logistics. So, it’s just me and Griff and uh we’re starting the trail. So far so good. really
beautiful. Bunch of really nice meadows as we make our way along the Sanwaqin River. Got our pack
set up. Uh we’re a little overpacked, but we’re going to be hanging out at Thousand Island Lake
all day tomorrow, so it’ll be worth it. [Music] All right, we’re making a stop on the trail, get
a couple snacks. I think through the trail, we just kind of started hitting the harder section.
Once we got to the Shadow Creek Junction, uh we started doing some switchbacks, got to see some
beautiful scenery, some beautiful waterfalls, the Sanwaqin River below. Yeah, really cool section.
So, we’re just taking a break in the shade, and then we’re going to keep making our way.
So, we’ve been making pretty good time so far. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Right here we got the Sanwaqen.
The Sanwaqen actually originates the headwater of Thousand Island
Lakes where we’re going. So pretty awesome to see it up way up here in the
mountains and right by our house, too. [Music] [Applause] [Music] We’re a couple miles from Thousand Island Lake.
We’re making our way up these switchbacks right now. Um, kind of ended up being a little more
difficult than we planned, but we’re making our way through. Yeah, it was kind of challenging. I’m
I’ve been having to pull over and take breaks. My back’s getting a little sore here, but uh we’re
making our way through. So, couple more miles. Yeah, switchbacks for days
coming up here slow and steady. [Music] All right, we are at the headwaters of the
Sanwaqin River here. We’re almost there. We’re just making our last little way on this
hike to get into a Thousand Island Lakes here. As we got closer to the lake, the trail opened up
and you could see that we were gaining altitude. The trees began to thin as we started
to approach the tree line and I could feel something changing. Then as we
stepped out of the trees on the trail, we saw it for the first time. Thousand Island
Lakes stretched out in front of me, calm and wide. The water was dark blue and clear with small
rocky islands scattered across. Behind the lake, Banner Peak stood tall, still with a
bit of snow from this past snow year. [Music] We stopped walking and couldn’t
help but take in the view. It was so beautiful that it didn’t feel real.
I’ve seen pictures of this lake for years, but nothing does it justice until
you see it in person. It was like we found our own hidden piece of the world
and we had the place all to ourselves. [Music] Amazing sight. And after that tough hike,
it made it even better as we made our way on the shoreline to look for our
camp for the next couple of days. We made it to Thousand Island
Lake after years of planning and uh getting all the logistics
situated and everything. difficult trail. Lots of switchbacks coming up.
Finally made it about 8 miles in. Uh beautiful, one of the most beautiful lakes I’ve ever
seen. And we’re just getting here. So, we’re going to go explore around the lake, look
for a camp spot, just chill out and relax. That’s kind of why we came on this trip once we did
the hard work of getting here on the hike. Yeah, we get to chill and enjoy this place. Pretty much
have it all to ourselves. So, awesome. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] some spaghetti sauce. That’s
different. That’s the first time. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. N. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] Day two, we woke up at Thousand Island Lake. And
today we decided that we were going to spend our day exploring around the lake and seeing all the
sights and sounds that the lake has to offer. We spent the morning exploring our peninsula
that we camped on. Got our things together and made a little breakfast before we set out
on a hike to the opposite side of the lake. Looks like Sweden. [Music] The farther we went along the shoreline, it seemed to get better and better as the
peninsulas became more open and there are different flowers and vegetation and animals
as we made our way further down the lake. Woke up lakeside this morning. Uh got up,
made a little something to eat. Uh did some exploring around. And uh we got into
camp a little later in the day yesterday, so we decided to take today to explore
around this trail on this lake. And yeah, we’re just checking out cool camp spots, some
beautiful peninsulas and islands out here. And we kind of made it to the far side of the
lake behind the mountains right now. And uh yeah, it’s really amazing open terrain, really
untouched. So it’s awesome day so far. And yeah, we’re just going to hang out, relax today, get
our legs back under us, recover from our hike yesterday, and uh get ready to go back on the
trail tomorrow. So, just enjoying the day today at Thousand Island Lake and enjoying the weather.
A little windy, nice and cool. Couldn’t beat it. Once you get to the back side of the lake
near the mountains, you get a really cool view of all the different islands that are
on the lake. And you get to see the sheer ruggedness of the mountains and the terrain
as we explored some smaller lakes in the area. [Music] We had this whole side of the lake
to ourselves and we took the moment to appreciate the beauty that we were
seeing for the first time. The desolate wilderness and the steep mountains in
our backdrop as we hopped around the rocks and streams and started making
our way back towards our campsite. [Music] [Music] The trail was really nice going this
way. and we went back to the campsite, took a little swim, and then decided to
take a nap and get out of the sun in our tents. There was really no shade at our
campsite, so we got pretty burnt by the sun and tried to keep cool as we hung out
and enjoyed the nature around us. [Music] So, we’re at the end of day two here. We just kind
of spent the day exploring around and relaxing. Uh getting prepared for the hike back to the truck
tomorrow, but it’s going to be downhill. So, I think we’re all set to go and prepared.
We ate a bunch today. Hung out around the lake. Got a little too much sun and uh yeah,
we’re just going to have a early night under these stars out here. It’s really beautiful.
Getting a little cold and windy, but uh yeah, kind of nice to have a little break from
the sun as we are exposed around here. Today was pretty cool. We got to really explore
this lake all the way around the other side and it’s uh pretty crazy. Some something I’ve never
seen ever before. It was pretty neat to get to the back side of it, too. And uh super cool trip.
Super grateful that we uh did this. We’ve been wanting to do it for a long time and got it done.
So, you know, it’s bittersweet last night here, but uh going to head on home tomorrow
and it’s going to be great memories. [Music] Day three. We woke up early at Thousand
Island Lake and got our things together to prepare for our 8 mile hike back to the
trail head. Today would pose some logistical issues as not only did we have to hike the
8 miles to make it back to the trail head, but we had a possible 5 miles more of hiking
through town to get back to our truck due to the fact that the shuttle buses weren’t running during
the week due to the road construction. [Music] That’s [Music] We enjoyed our last time on the lake and
even met a couple of friends that would come in handy later as we had to navigate
our logistical issues and the lack of shuttle buses on the road construction ahead. [Music]
All right, day three. We’re leaving Thousand Island Lakes right now and uh making our way
on the river trail back to Agne Meadows. So, got a Pretty decent start today. Got a little
something to eat. Packed up our stuff. Uh put extra sun protection on today cuz we both got
pretty burnt and we’re ready for it. [Music] Today would be downhill, so it shouldn’t be
quite as hard on the trail. And we were in good spirits as we made our way down the mountain
and back into the forest. Coming down the trail, you realize how many different switchbacks
and how steep the trail really was. Going up, we were so focused. We didn’t notice that we had
climbed quite a bit of altitude. It’s a lot easier going downhill, and we made pretty good time
as we made our way back into Ag New Meadows. [Music] Yeah, coming down this though it’s super
enjoyable. Like you could scenery is nice. [Music] [Music] Making our way down. when we’re a little
bit more than halfway. Um, when you’re coming up the trail, like we did on our first day of the
hike, basically once you pass that halfway point, it’s pretty much uphill the whole time. So, today
we’re going downhill the whole way. We’re hanging out, stopping along the Sanwaqin River a couple
times here and uh making progress. So, yeah, we’re going to make our way down to Ag New Meadows and
then from there assess how we’re going to get back to the car. So, it’s going to be an adventure.
already made our way down to the meadows. So, yeah, it’s been a lot easier today going downhill,
that’s for sure. And uh we’re still charging on [Music] [Applause] [Music] So it’s official from this trail head is where
it gets It’s hard. We just got to the Shadow Lake River Trail uh junction here. And so, yeah, for
you guys that are watching this at home, that’s where the trail officially starts to get hard.
So, when you’re going up to Thousand Island Lake, from here out, you’re starting to hit some uphill.
So, we’re making our way. So, we’re climbing it back up climbing back up this ridge right now
to get back to Agy Meadows. Heat. Heat. [Music] All right, we made it back to Ag New Meadows
right now from the river trail. Made it back down from Thousand Island Lake. Uh took us about
3 and 1/2 hours, I think, to make it down with some stops. So, pretty decent. A little climb
at the end coming back into Agne Meadows. So, that’s something to keep out. But now we’re faced
with the next uh dilemma on our adventure here. We’ve got to walk uh this four or five miles
up this paved road to get back to our truck. Um because of construction right now, they’re
saying that they’re not they weren’t allowing trucks to come down here. So, we had to walk the
whole way out. The shuttle doesn’t run during the week. Some distance on this construction road.
And now the construction workers won’t let us go on the road. But they didn’t allow us to park
our truck down here. So now we may have to take a whole another trail to get out of here. We didn’t
have many options as there was two times during the day that the pilot car would come and let us
through. So our group of people had to wait until 3:30 before the pilot would let us through and on
our way back to Mammoth Village. So we got picked up by some good Samaritans that were hiking on
the river trail uh who were also up at Thousand Island. So, we tried to go on this construction
road uh with a truck and they wouldn’t even let us out with the truck. So, now we got to wait
a couple more hours and then hope that they allow us to pass. You guys can get in there. Nice
meeting you. Thank you guys. We’ll see you soon. All right. What do you think? Yeah. I
can’t believe that. That was awesome. We met some good Samaritans uh and some fellow
hikers, Kent and his family. Uh they were kind enough to wait with us uh while we were waiting
for the pilot car in the construction zone and we got to ride in the back of his truck up the road.
Saved us about 5 miles and it was really dusty and bad on that road. So, we’re going to go down to
Mammoth Brewery and uh meet them, buy them a beer, and uh celebrate our adventure and make our
way back to Fresno. What a adventure it was. [Music] As we made our way home through Yoseite, we
thought about all the beautiful sights and sounds we got to see on our Thousand Island Lake
adventure. This was one of those places that you really have to see to believe in person, and it
made the difficult hike worth the trip. We thank you for stopping by and watching our adventure,
and we hope you get a chance one day to experience this place for yourself. This is Chris from
Shred Vision. Thank you and take care. [Music]
