The Museo del Prado in Madrid is one of the world’s most important art museums and the main national museum of Spain. It opened in 1819 to display the Spanish royal art collection under the patronage of Ferdinand VII of Spain, strongly supported by his wife Maria Isabel of Braganza. The museum building itself was designed by the neoclassical architect Juan de Villanueva.

The Prado is especially famous for its outstanding collection of European paintings from the 12th to the early 20th centuries. Its greatest strength lies in Spanish art, with remarkable holdings by masters such as Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, and El Greco. The museum also includes important works by other major European artists, including Hieronymus Bosch, Peter Paul Rubens, Raphael, and Rembrandt.

Among its most celebrated paintings are Las Meninas by Velázquez, The Third of May 1808 by Goya, and Bosch’s fantastical The Garden of Earthly Delights. Today the museum houses thousands of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints.

Together with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Prado forms part of Madrid’s famous “Golden Triangle of Art,” attracting millions of visitors every year.

  1. A great walk today. Beautiful big blue skies and magnificent buildings. It’s a great place to walk around, we never get the metro because you miss so much while you’re under ground. Some fabulous old shops. Thanks Steve and Anita.
