Starting the Camino del Norte | Stage 1: Irun to San Sebastián | Camino Northern Route
Episode 236:
ℹ️ Day 1 on the Camino del Norte is not for the faint of heart. Leaving Irun, Spain, the trail almost immediately begins a steep climb before climbing even higher on the Purgatorio Route where spectacular views of the ocean await. We however had a different experience. Cool temperatures, high winds, and driving rain made the climb extra difficult and thick clouds and fog obscured almost all of our views. But “ultreia e suseia” to San Sebastián. Come along with us as we begin this amazing adventure.

I am so proud of y’all on this very first day!! 🎉🎉🎉
Welcome to the hardest Camino 🤣
Have you heard of this Camino? Have you walked it? Dreaming about it? Tell us your Camino story in the comments! 👇🏼
Sending hugs and love and admiration–and missing you both! Thot: sometimes the hard times (rainy days) are beneficial because they give a contrast and an appreciation for the blessed times (and sunny days). Also, my new nickname is "slow on the uptake David." I discovered today (finally) that I had never been to your website or read your blog! Doh on me! Went there to catch up on your fall in Paris and will visit there much more frequently now. So sorry about your fall and your terrible experience in the French hospital! I hope you are recovering well. Brian, kudos for getting this video up so quickly! It's so "fresh" that it feels like I'm there with you, which would be a joy! (Clarification: A joy to fellowship with you both, though I would totally not be up for the ass-kicking!) Buen camino!
Wishing we could be there with you, sorry your first day was challenging. Buen Camino, Todd and Clara from Kansas City.
Wow! Glad to see you out there Michelle and glad to see you took those steps easy! That weather was terrible! How long did you walk on that ridge in that terrible weather? I like how Brian said you stopped for a bathroom/cocktail break 😂. Keep on keepin on! You’ve got this!!
I hiked the Del Norte to Bilbao and that section was difficult; especially the first day going over the Purgatorio Route. From our hotel to the end hotel was 30k. That said, I would easily do it all over again.
I’m watching your series with great anticipation as I hope to hike the remainder of the DN from Bilbao in the not too distant future.
Buen Camino!!!
Safe journey! Excited to follow along. Def a windy and foggy start
My husband and I walked the Norte last September celebrating our 70th birthdays. It’s definitely a challenging one! Portuguese and Francigena are under our belts so this September we’re headed out to do the Frances. I’m thinking this one will be a walk in the park compared to the Norte! Buen Camino. Enjoying your videos!
Buen Camino – Challenging first day! On the Francés enjoying my last rest day in Leon.
Hey guys we have some catching up to do you have several videos to check out. Life took us by surprise and we had to take a small break but we are catching up now slowly. So glad your back out and going we are so excited to watch this whole adventure. This is going to be fun oh love the new hair!
WOW! you really had to battle with the elements of the weather. Great days effort and the weather would certainly made it worse than if the conditions were more pleasant. 🙏🏼👍🏼🤠 Buon Camino.
Such an awful start for you and many others this summer on the caminos, if it ain’t raining it’s a heatwave ! My first day on the Norte was absolutely wonderful, a fantastic day – in September 2022. It is beautiful, stunning, on the high route and even the much talked about awful climb at the start isn’t that long or bad (I admit I only walk with a day pack). There isn’t much accommodation in Pasaia but my advice is to overnight there and have a short walk into San Sebastián and an afternoon exploring the city on day 2. (with the best pinchos of the entire coast). Looking forward to watching more….
Thanks for the vid. Wow, your start to the Norte route was a baptism of fire (or rain. The other vids of Norte that I've seen, they were mostly sunny at the start (Irum or San Sebastian). I've seen some of your later vids (I didn't start from Vid1) – you started in June & it was rainy!
The others that I've seen, they started in April and they had mostly sunny skies. It also rained a bit but they had mostly clear skies (April to May 2023, Ellie and Senci vlog). I know that this is from 2024. Do you plan to do another Camino this year?
