Barcelona is located on the northeastern coast of Spain, facing the Mediterranean Sea, about 150 km south of the French border. Autovía del Nordeste (A-2) is one of Spain’s major radial highways, connecting Madrid to Barcelona.
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, one of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities, with its own parliament, president, and official language—Catalan. The Muralla de Santa Madrona and Portal de Santa Madrona are among the few surviving fragments of Barcelona’s medieval fortifications.
Plaça de les Drassanes marks a vibrant junction in Barcelona where history, transit, and culture converge. Plaça de les Drassanes is named after the nearby Reials Drassanes, the medieval royal shipyards.
The Columbus Monument is one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks, standing at the southern end of La Rambla, Barcelona’s most iconic boulevard. Built in 1888, the Columbus Monument honors his return to Barcelona after his voyage to the Americas.
La Rambla is an iconic street in Barcelona that stretches 1.2 kilometers from the Columbus Monument to Plaça de Catalunya. It is the vibrant artery of Barcelona, pulsing with history, culture, and street life.
Arenas de Barcelona—once a bullring, is now a vibrant shopping and cultural hub at the heart of Plaça d’Espanya.
Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) was a visionary Catalan architect whose work defined and transcended Modernisme.
Gaudí’s magnum opus, the Sagrada Família basilica, has been under construction for over 140 years since its cornerstone was laid in 1882. The Modernisme architecture of Sagrada Família features curving lines, asymmetry, nature-inspired motifs—plants, animals, shells—and vibrant mosaics of broken ceramic tile. The Sagrada Família is Barcelona’s most iconic landmark. At 172.5 meters, Gaudí’s central spire will make the Sagrada Família the world’s tallest church. The Sagrada Família is expected to be completed by 2026, the centennial of Gaudí’s death.
Casa Batlló is Antoni Gaudí’s surreal masterpiece of Modernisme style.
Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf was built as the grand entrance to the 1888 World Fair.
The 1992 Olympic Stadium (Lluís Companys Stadium), perched high on Montjuïc Hill in the Sants-Montjuïc district. Torre de Comunicacions de Montjuïc is a sinuous 136m telecommunications tower built for the 1992 Olympics.
Poble Espanyol (Spanish for “Spanish Village”) is a unique open-air architectural museum located on Montjuïc Hill in Barcelona. It was built in 1929, with 117 buildings showcasing Spain’s typical regional architecture.
Montserrat Monastery is nestled in Monistrol de Montserrat, Catalonia, 45 km from Barcelona.
